Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

Leila lost her father to cancer a couple of months ago.  Her mother died when she was little, and she can’t stand her grandmother.  She is lost and decides to travel to Samoa to meet her mother’s family.  Her grandmother is dead-set against it, but Leila is determined to go.

She meets and stays with her aunt and uncle.  She will do what they require her to do, even go to school.  However, they refuse to talk about her mother and she has no idea how to learn more about her.  That was the main reason she came. She is immersed in the island culture and begins to learn about herself.  She meets Daniel and is instantly drawn to him.  Things are moving forward until the fire comes.  There is more to her story than she ever knew.  The reader is along for the ride as Leila learns what she is and what she can do.  She also learns that her dad lied about her mother.  Surprise she isn’t dead.  That was a shock to both Leila and I as the story unfolded.  Then you know something isn’t right, yet you watch Leila try to build a relationship with her mother.  It works for a while until the true reasons come out and a power struggle in the coven begins.  Leila learns what they truly want her for and threats against those she loves are made.  She must break the covenant by revealing who and what she truly is to a male.  She needs all the help she can get.  It was a great story.  I couldn’t put it down.  I give it a 4 out of 5.
