Review: Into the Shadows (Book 1 of the Into the Shadows Trilogy) by Karly Kirkpatrick

Book Blurb

Being different might just get you killed.

Paivi Anderson's perfect life unravels before her eyes, as forces beyond her control cause the very fabric of her country to crumble. Fear and terror reign, forcing neighbor to turn against neighbor. Being a freshman in high school and trying to hide her powers is hard enough without having to wonder who she can trust.

Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

Paivi Anderson is a high school student who has a special ability.  She has visions of future events.  She even knew her best friend’s mother would die in a car accident but could do nothing to stop it.  She carries the guilt and keeps her abilities a secret.
The author bounces back and forth between Paivi and the newly elected president.  A list of those with special abilities was compiled and under the president’s order declared enemies of the state.
The author creates the air of hatred that is perpetuated by the government.  Paivi’s family is caught in the middle.  It has a Nazi feel as the parents are physically removed from the house by gun point.  It is almost sickening to read as I could recognize the parallels. The people live in fear and those not arrested are trying to flee.
The more I read the angrier I became of the injustice and rights violations.  The author did a fabulous job creating the situation that really questions the possibilities.  Terrorist groups were at the center of the controversy.  Even though the people targeted had paranormal abilities, the possibility is always there.

I felt sorry for Paivi.  She was placed in a difficult place.  Her parents believed since they were innocent things would be fine.  Unfortunately, it didn’t matter.  The ending was heart wrenching and I really want to see where the author takes things.  I give it a 4 out of 5.
