Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala
Ree is
special. She has been chosen. She is the mortal who will save humans from
the dark ones. Her friends are slowly
changing. They are becoming immortal and
turning into her guardians. Their job is
to protect her. She finds out she will
be learning to control her powers from her boss Sophie and a dark one named
Roland. They are preparing Ree and her
friends for battle. Ree doesn’t
understand why she is the only one to remain mortal while everyone else becomes
immortal. She is the one who has to
defeat the dark ones’ champion.
This new
world Ree is introduced scares her and her new role in it frustrates her. The responsibility weighing on her shoulders
is heavy. When she comes face to face
with the dark ones’ champion she is shocked.
He killed someone close to her and there was nothing she could do to
stop it. Her heart is shattered.
This book
had an interesting storyline. The dark
ones are vampires and Ree has been chosen by the gods to enter the last battle
to defeat them. She is given Paden, her
crush, as a guardian. However, unlike
the others before her, she gets four more guardians to help protect her. Her whole group of friends enter the world of
vampires with her.
I am really
surprised at some of the things that Ree deals with in this book. She remains mortal and will eventually grow
old and die. Her friends will remain as
they are forever. That seemed like a
sucky deal for her. She gets this
unimaginable power but remains human and clearly killable. She also has to go to battle with
vampires. Her hurt and frustration is
palpable. Paden doesn’t help the
situation at all. He first runs hot then
cold, claiming an oath that he gave to her brother. Then claims he can’t watch her grow old and
die. Are you kidding me? I was angry for her. She handled things much better than I would
have. The ending is pretty
shocking. I wasn’t expecting the author
to go in that direction. It really made
the next book interesting. I give it a
3.5 out of 5.
