Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala
Janie Grey
is a seeker. She is a senior in high
school. In fact this is her second trip
through high school. Every four years
she and her mother move. Janie has been
trained to kill vampires and Daychildren.
Both groups prey on humans and it’s her job to protect the humans from
the nightmares they don’t realize are there.
One night
she battles with some Daychildren. When
she meets Kai. Kai is everything she is
supposed to hate, yet he helps her kill his kind. She is confused. She is supposed to hate him and kill
him. Yet he is not behaving as he should
for a daychild. In fact he keeps coming
to help her as she does her job. He
intrigues her and she starts to wonder why he is doing what he is doing. They continue to help each other and become
friends.
Janie’s
mother and her mentor can’t believe she has formed any type of relationship
with the enemy. She also saved a classmate which caused even more issues. They may have been an imprint. She can’t believe how her life and her job
has changed. Nothing she believed to be
true seems to be the same. Vampires are
trying to blend in with humans instead of kill them. Daychildren are the biggest threat. Unfortunately, it is hard to change the views
of the older seekers. They live in the
past and refuse to believe things change.
When she
finds out Kai’s biggest secret, she can’t believe what she is hearing. Her feelings of betrayal are instant. However, she has bigger problems to face as
the daychildren make a move against the area teenagers.
I liked this
book. The storyline was a nice twist on
vampire lore. Janie was a great
character. She is a vampire hunter in
modern day. She knows how to fight and
she hunts most nights then goes to high school during the day. She has no patience for high school
drama. She has her best friends and her
hunting. It’s all she needs.
I love how
she meets Kai. He is her enemy but
doesn’t act like one. It throws her for
a loop. I found it fascinating to watch
as they found their way around each other.
She didn’t know what to do with him. Then throw Matt in the mix who felt
he had strong feelings for her. There
was a lot of tension and unexpected actions.
Janie was blazing a new way to do things. I was surprised that she appeared to be the
only seeker in the area. She was
expected to fight on her own. It was a
family tradition. So when Kai joined her
and helped, I found it nice to see.
Her mother
and Abram were the characters that annoyed me.
They were judgmental and unbending.
I felt they refused to think for themselves. It shocked me that Janie was a lot more
independent than her mother seemed to be.
With that in
mind, I really liked the story. I am
interested to see where the author is going to take the series. I give it a 4 out of 5.
