Review: Coexist (Keegan's Chronicles #1) by Julia Crane

Book Blurb

Sixteen-year-old Keegan is struggling to keep her huge secret from her friends--she's an elf, descended from a long line of elves that live in secrecy alongside humans.

In elfin society, mates are predetermined but not allowed to meet until they are eighteen. Against tradition, Keegan's brother Thaddeus told her Rourk's name because his visions warned him she'd need Rourk's protection, especially since Keegan will play a key role in the coming war between the dark and light elves.

Rourk finds himself drawn to Keegan's side every time she thinks his name. He wants to talk to her but remains in the shadows, silently guarding her every time she mentally beckons him. A twist of fate thrusts the two of them together when Rourk is forced to step up his protection and make his presence known.

An ancient prophecy deeply entwines Keegan's family and the future of their society. Somehow they must find a way to thwart fate and win the battle...without losing Keegan. With war brewing, and dark forces aligning, will Keegan and Rourk ever have the life together that they both desire?

Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

Keegan knows she is an elf and in two years will meet her mate.  So she is enjoying her time spending it with her friends and dating boys.  One day at a fair she and her friends visit a psychic.  The day turns weird when she sees a dark elf.  She didn’t know they mixed with humans.  Her world changes that day.  She learns about the elf war brewing and what her brother’s role will be.  She is shocked and hopes her parents are overreacting.  They send her intended to secretly watch over her.  Rourk is surprised to be allowed near his intended before the time but she plays some part in the upcoming war.  The great battle has been foretold and Thaddeus has found out where and when the battle will occur.
Their father calls forth the warriors to train.  They have a surprise on their side.  It is time to prepare.  Keegan’s training is taken over by her mother as she is encouraged to be a normal teen.  Keegan knows she has come face to face with her intended and doesn’t feel herself.  Part of her seems to be missing.  Her parents allow Keegan and Rourk to have a weekend before the battle begins.
Unfortunately, the battle takes a terrible turn.  Keegan’s life changes forever, even her plans for her and her intended.
I had a hard time reading this book.  Keegan came across so spoiled and selfish.  Her immaturity really jumped from the pages.  As a character I couldn’t really stand her.  Her younger brother was a better character, in my opinion.  Rourk was also a good character.  He took care of business.  Keegan came across as shallow and materialistic.  If she didn’t get her way, I could see her throwing a tantrum.

I did, however, like the storyline.  The battle between dark and light is on-going.  I also liked the traditions upheld during battle.  It was cool to read.  The idea of only fighting with swords and stopping at sundown made it a little less barbaric.  I also liked that Rourk was a mighty warrior.  He was definitely a great hero and sigh-worthy intended.  Too bad Keegan was less than stellar.  I give it a 3 out of 5.
