Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala
In this
first book of the Kingdom series, Alice Hu is fulfilling her dream of opening a
cupcake shop. Her Wonderland theme is
based on her favorite childhood story and her love of the Mad Hatter. She once believed the story was named after
her.
Unknown to
her the Mad Hatter actually exists and his fairy godmother is searching for his
Alice before he spirals down into complete madness. That search leads to Alice’s cupcakery door. She give Alice a card with a rabbit printed
on it.
When Alice
rubs the picture, a rabbit appears to escort her to Wonderland. She has three days to save the Mad Hatter
from complete madness. Unfortunately the
past comes out to thwart her efforts.
Secrets about her are revealed as she tries to save the man she has
truly always loved.
This is a
twist on the fairytale happily ever afters.
I love that this series focuses on the bad guys. After they lose the girl, life goes on. It was fun reading about them seated at the
same table while their fairy godmother tells them she is finding their match.
The author
adds the year timeline that gives a sense of urgency to the story. The first is the Mad Hatter. He is too close to going completely mad forever. The author then immerses the reader into
Wonderland. You are along for the ride
as Alice learns Wonderland is real as is the Mad Hatter.
Her shock is
front and center. Her sadness about what
is at stake also bleeds through. I like
the whole concept and the characters.
The storyline is unique and a fun read.
I give it a 4 out of 5.
