Review: Styxx (Dark-Hunter #12) by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Book Blurb

There are two sides to every story.

And you don't know Styxx …

Sherrilyn Kenyon's most highly-anticipated novel in the Dark-Hunter series since Acheron is here--the unforgettable story of Styxx, Acheron's twin brother and one of the most powerful beings on earth

Just when you thought doomsday was over . . .

Centuries ago Acheron saved the human race by imprisoning an ancient evil bent on absolute destruction. Now that evil has been unleashed and it is out for revenge.

As the twin to Acheron, Styxx hasn't always been on his brother's side. They've spent more centuries going at each other's throats than protecting their backs. Now Styxx has a chance to prove his loyalty to his brother, but only if he's willing to trade his life and future for Acheron's.

The Atlantean goddess of Wrath and Misery, Bethany was born to right wrongs. But it was never a task she relished. Until now.

She owes Acheron a debt that she vows to repay, no matter what it takes. He will join their fellow gods in hell and nothing is going to stop her. But things are never what they seem, and Acheron is no longer the last of his line. Styxx and Acheron must put aside their past and learn to trust each other or more will suffer.

Yet it's hard to risk your own life for someone who once tried to take yours, even when it's your own twin, and when loyalties are skewed and no one can be trusted, not even yourself, how do you find a way back from the darkness that wants to consume the entire world? One that wants to start by devouring your very soul?

Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

Styxx loved his brother Acheron. However his father did not. He refused to claim him as a son and Acheron was denied love from his father and his mother. Styxx was hated by his mother and he craved love from his father and sister. Unfortunately he was never good enough. He was beaten for any wrong doing his father thought he should be punished for. His life got worse as he grew older. He learned the truth of what his uncle did to Acheron and found himself in the same situation. He was treated for demon possession and sent to war before he was old enough. Then he caught the eye of Apollo. The god refused to leave him alone.

The only good thing in his life was Bethany. She was the blind woman he stumbled upon one day at the river. She became the only person in his life besides Galen that showed him any kindness. She became his life.

When she disappeared he lost everything and his life took a definite turn for the worse as Apollo was determined to break him. Acheron now hated him and his enemies tortured him. When Apollymi took revenge for Acheron’s death, she stole Styxx’s soul when Bethany got caught up in the destruction of the Atlantis Gods. Styxx spends thousands of years in exile while Acheron spends that time building the Dark Hunters and Stryker builds his Deimons army. Styxx only joins the modern age when Gods again decide to use him to destroy his brother. The hatred they feel for each other still burns. Styxx just wants Acheron to kill him. He is an empty shell and without Beth can’t stand to be around people.

Only when the Atlantean Gods break Apollymi’s imprisonment does the truth of Styxx’s life come out. Apollymi and Acheron both realize what really transpired since both boys were born and what they both lived through. The battle truly begins.

I love this author. She is an all-time favorite of mine. I have had this book for awhile building up the courage to read it. I loved Acheron and hated Styxx. I knew that I would learn more of his story and realize how he really was. I was proven right. There was definitely more to the story. Styxx’s life was not all it appeared to be. You immediately feel sorry for both Styxx and Acheron. They both suffered throughout their childhoods. If you read Acheron’s story, you know what truly happened to him. Unfortunately it seems the life Styxx lived was even worse. His treatment was shocking because that was not what I was truly expecting.

After reading the book, he has become a favored character instead of a hated one. You come to realize what drove him and why he did what he did. This book was an epic story right along with Archeron. It was a story well worth the wait and the time it took to read. I continue to love this series and the characters the author creates and shares. The story of Styxx is a highly recommended read for any Sherilyn Kenyon fan as is the series for any reader. Styxx gets a 5 out of 5.
