Review : Remember by Eileen Cook

Book Blurb

A thrilling tale about what a girl will do to get back a memory she lost…or remove what she wants to forget.

Harper is used to her family being hounded by protesters. Her father runs the company that trademarked the "Memtex" procedure to wipe away sad memories, and plenty of people think it shouldn't be legal. Then a new demonstrator crosses her path, Neil, who’s as persistent as he is hot. Not that Harper’s noticing, since she already has a boyfriend.

When Harper suffers a loss, she’s shocked her father won’t allow her to get the treatment, so she finds a way to get it without his approval. Soon afterward, she’s plagued with strange symptoms, including hallucinations of a woman who is somehow both a stranger, yet incredibly familiar. Harper begins to wonder if she is delusional, or if these are somehow memories.

Together with Neil, who insists he has his own reasons for needing answers about the real dangers of Memtex, Harper begins her search for the truth. What she finds could uproot all she’s ever believed about her life…

Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

Harper is a senior at Saint Francis High School in Washington State. Her father is a famous Neurologist that has developed the procedure called Memtex. It is a procedure that softens bad memories. It has been successful for patients with PTSD. Harper’s dad has been very successful with his company and this procedure. Harper is happy with her life. She has dated her boyfriend, Josh, forever. Her best friend, Win, is always there and her favorite thing in life is her horse, Harry. She has had him since she was six.

Unfortunately it doesn’t last. She loses Harry one night after one of her jumping competitions. Her world comes crashing down and she decides to have the Memtex procedure to feel better. Her father is dead set against it which surprises her and confuses her. So she and Josh come up with a plan.

After she has the procedure everything changes. She doesn’t feel any better. Things start getting weird. She starts having strange dreams about an unknown woman. She thinks she is going crazy. Her relationship with Josh starts to crumble and when she learns who the woman in her dreams really is, her life as she knows it is over. Nothing will ever be the same.

I wasn’t sure about the storyline in the beginning. It was a little bizarre with the memory softening. I wondered where the author would take the story. I was surprised when Harper starts questioning things she never has before and the secrets she learned.

The author took the characters on a crazy ride. Harper kept thinking she was going crazy. She didn’t want to believe what was being revealed. She was eventually brave enough to face the truth and do the right thing no matter what. I really liked that about her. She ended up being a strong female character who questioned her life when it was the harder thing to do. It was a truly unique story with interesting characters. I give it a 3 out of 5.
