A Heroine's Journey by Jessica Scott

All I Want for Christmas Is You is a pretty personal book for me. Even though it’s a novella – and it’s 100% fiction – there’s some emotional baggage in there that is all mine.

When I came home from Iraq in 2009, I remember how badly I wanted to just sit on my couch in my living room and listen to my kids run around and play. And then I got home – and the fantasy didn’t quite pan out.

Like Sam, I felt like I didn’t fit anymore. Like Sam, things only felt “right” when I was at work around the people I’d spent the last year shoulder to shoulder with. And like Sam, I felt like I wasn’t a very good mom any more because I’d forgotten how to actually be a mom.

It’s hard coming home from war for anyone but I think that for moms, it’s a little different. Not better or worse, but definitely different. Moms have to be supermom just to get through a normal day – military moms even more so. I think we haven’t asked the right questions about whether going to war has different effects on moms than dads.

Sam’s story is an attempt to wrestle with what coming home feels like for a mom who couldn’t reconnect with her lover or her child. She was shut down and cold – and she needed someone who loved her enough to stand with her while she found her way out of the dark.

Sam isn’t me, but some parts of her story are. And like Sam, the war never leaves you. It sneaks up on you when you’re least expecting it. But like Sam, I’ve found my way out of the dark and back to a family that loves me.

I hope you’ll go on Sam’s journey home. I think it’s an important story to tell.
