Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala
Leopold Ernst George Mortimer, the seventh Earl of March is passing through Denmark and finds himself in the most precarious situations. First he is saving a kitten from a tree for a young girl and then he is set upon by a group of Danish soldiers. He is able to crawl and collapse in Dagmar’s garden.
Dagmar is the princess of Denmark and since the death of her father, her cousin has informed her that he is done caring for her. She needs to find elsewhere to live. Dagmar has no where to go, so she and her companion must come up with a plan.
When Leo falls into their laps, Dagmar finally decides he is their way out of Denmark. She feels guilty about marrying him while he is senseless with fever but she has no choice. Of course when Leo learns the truth, nothing goes as planned. Then a murder mystery envelops Dagmar and the truth is shocking.
I love this author and have read many of her books. I enjoy her characters and the humor she intertwines throughout the story. This story doesn’t disappoint. Dagmar is hilarious. She is a princess that says and thinks almost anything. I can just imagine Leo’s face when she says the things she does. I laughed out loud on more than one occasion.
In fact the characters were the center of the whole story. I felt the plot was secondary. The women, to be more to the point, made the whole story. I wish I had friends like that. Absolutely hilarious to read about them drinking whiskey and picture them being drunk. Then Plum writes books about sexual positions. That aspect was comical to imagine in that era.
It was a fun read with awesome characters by a beloved author. I give it a 4 out of 5.
