Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala
In this second book of the Demon Gate, Amaranth and her small group of five made it out of London. Ryland is dead and so is the traitor Peter. Am, Dham, Patrick, Kevin and Cat are on their way to Paris trying to stay one step ahead of the Inquisition. They are trying to get to The Vatican City to carry out the Resistance’s plans to close the demon gate.
Amaranth finds herself bond to the demon, Trick, that has possessed Patrick’s body. Her attempt to separate him from Patrick’s body backfired and she ended up in a worse position. She is determined to find a way to break the bond and save Patrick. She continues to fight the cause after her devastating losses from her mother’s death and that of Ryland’s. However, Am is questioning herself and the trust she has with their new leader Kevin. Her feelings for Dham are also growing. She doesn’t need the distraction but can’t stop them.
The inquisition catches up and they have to flee to Prague without Kevin. Amaranth becomes the leader of the small group of four. They seek protection and a place to stay with the Resistance group in Prague. Am has been practicing her magic. No one but Trick and Dham know. When Trick has to retreat deep into Patrick’s body to keep everyone safe, Am is left to explain to Patrick what happened to him and what the plan is when they get to Rome.
When the Inquisition finds them in Prague, Am unleashes the Stone Golem hidden in the underground to fight the demons closing in. Her small group flees to Rome. Everything is about to change. Patrick reveals what he wants and Amaranth is trying to hold everything together while continuing with the mission. When everything goes wrong Am is afraid no one will make it out alive.
I like this book, however I didn’t read the first one in the series and, as a result, I was a bit confused in the beginning. I missed everything that lead to the point they were in and since it is an important part of the whole storyline, I recommend reading book one first.
The storyline from this book was extremely interesting. You have the characters on a mission and on the run. It was fascinating to see how the story unfolded and how they related to each other. Trick possessing Patrick’s body was a great twist. It created many individual problems for the group. Amaranth was torn when she actually started to like the demon. This story was full of suspense and fight scenes. It was exciting and kept the reader on their toes. The ending is shocking. I give it a 4 out of 5.
