Review : Just Like the Movies by Kelly Fiore (YA)

Book Blurb

Pretty and popular track star Marijke Monti is confident about almost everything – she’s got great friends, a great family, and she’s on her way to the State Track Championship. In fact, the only thing Marijke isn’t confident about is her relationship with Tommy Lawson.

Lily Spencer has spent her entire high school career preparing for the future – she’s participated in every extracurricular activity and volunteer committee she could. But, at home, she watches her mother go on date after date with dud-dudes, still searching for “the one.” Lily realizes that she’s about to graduate and still hasn’t even had a boyfriend.

While they live on each other’s periphery at school, Lily and Marijke never seemed to have much in common; but, after a coincidental meeting at the movie theater, Lily gets an idea – why can’t life be like a movie? Why can’t they set up their perfect romantic situations, just in time for their senior prom, using movie techniques?

Once the girls come up with the perfect plans, they commit themselves to being secret cohorts and, just like in the movies, drama ensues.

Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

Marijke runs track for her high school team and girlfriend to hottie Tommy Lawson. She is waiting for Tommy to ask her to prom. She has also been unsure of his feelings for her. He is a flirt when it comes to other girls and her jealousy is getting the best of her.

One night after a fight with Tommy, she meets Lily while trying to watch a showing of Titanic. Marijke is too upset to stay and she and Lily end up in the coffee shop next door. They discuss how movies make it look so easy and why life can’t be like the movies. They hatch a plan. The movie experiment is born. They will reenact scenes from their favorite movies to show Tommy Marijke’s love and Joe Lombardi the interest Lily has in him.

Marijke and Lily plan grand gestures to get their points across. However as they find out real life is not like the movies. Things don’t go as planned. Real life intervenes leaving both girls to figure out what is really important.

This YA book was a great read. It was a realistic story about what it’s like to be in high school. Marijke lost herself in the couple, Tommy and Marijke. It took her awhile to figure out she was also important in the relationship. Lily had to learn to come out of her shell and she is worth spending time with.

The author presents great lessons for the reader to learn through the characters. This is a great book for teenage girls to read. I give it a 4 out of 5.
