Willow has her hands full scraping out a life in a grungy neighborhood where drugs and crime are the norm. Life is hard, but it’s about to get harder. Being transformed into a sexual pet for an alien warrior may be her only way out.

But Stom, the man she’s been awarded to as a battle honor, has no use for a female, not when his heart is still in a million pieces.

Though the need to be Stom’s mate is overwhelming her, mending his heart isn’t going to be enough. His enemies are searching, looking for the women who are more than they seem, and she’s in their hands before she discovers she’s more-than-human.

Sometimes it sucks to be a chosen one.

Book Excerpt

All the cravings of the past day or so resurrected in a small tsunami. Lust. In front of Willow, was a man who embodied that in every molten move, in every cell of his well-sculpted body.

“I’m bad?” she whispered.

“You. Mmm.” Stom lowered his head and scented her neck, lips pressing on her, here, there – kisses that stirred her more than they should, because they promised so much. Where else might he kiss? Drifts of air cooled her where his nose touched her skin, where he breathed on her.

“Bad. Definitely.” Then he licked her neck, slowly, in one helluva long caress with his tongue, like a predator tasting his mate, before he kissed her softly again.

She shivered. I don’t know this guy. Not really. Am I such a slut?

“You’re beautiful. And you smell so good I want to eat you all up, every time I’m near. Why the fuck is that?”

The tinge of menace made her go up on her toes.

Then he bit the side of her neck, hard.

She keened, threatened by, enraptured by, the savagery of his teeth sinking into her muscle. Helpless, she shut her eyes. She tried not to let her collapsing legs make her slide down the tree trunk and straight to the ground. She had no wish to look like a weak female unable to resist...cause if she did, it seemed like he might take her, here, now.

His teeth let go.

Fucked against a tree. God. What an idea.

Where he held her wrists onto the bark, she tugged again, but even with a hurt hand his grip was fierce.

What had she done? She’d thought Stom the sort of man who needed an invitation to get going. Seemed as if shooting him had done the trick. Next time she wanted a date, she’d put a bullet in him.

He put his mouth to her ear, nuzzling her there, while he explored her below – fondling her breast, her belly, and her hip, then tugging up her T-shirt. He took a handful of her breast like he owned it, and squeezed so much it hurt.

Something about being forced against the tree, about him making her stay there while he played with her body, sizzled through her like lightning through rain.

Interview

Hi Cari,

Thank you so much for sitting down with Toot's for an interview. If you don't mind, I have some questions for you about your series Preyfinders, your new book, Intimidator, and your process for our budding authors as well as fans.

So first off, your newest book is part of your series, Preyfinders. Let's talk about the series as a whole....

In your own words, what is the Preyfinders series about?

It’s set on current day Earth, on our planet mostly, and it’s about aliens coming to Earth to both decide if we can be potential starfarers and also because they like hunting for pets, it’s a reward for the warriors. Only in my stories, the men find the women they are paired with have powers that awaken when they mate.

What inspired the series?

I’ve always liked science fiction and have read books from space opera to hardcore scifi. I also love writing capture fantasies. My other capture fantasy series, Pierced Hearts, is much darker. This series is aimed at a more romantic market and has less kink in it. The kinkiness is limited to dominance, some bondage and a little spanking so far. I wanted to do scifi that would have a good audience and mixing it with abduction fantasies seemed a good bet.

Can you tell us a bit about the newest book in the series, Intimidator?

In this story Stom and Willow are the hero and heroine. They both have a gap in their lives, they’re both running on empty really, a step away from breaking down. Stom has lost his family to the Bak-lal, who are the big bad, and slightly horror-inducing, enemies. Willow is going to die soon, though she doesn’t know it, and she’s the carer of Ally, a young girl with problems handling society. So Stom and Willow are each other’s salvation.

Of course nothing is easy, though they fall for each other, the Bak-lal catch up with them. There are some full-on battle scenes in this book, some gore, and a little scary stuff here and there.

How did you come up with the title of your newest book in the series and can you tell us its significance?

I wanted a title that had a bit of alpha menace and I went through possibilities with some friends. Intimidator was my favorite pick for Book 2.

How does the new book, Intimidator, fit into the series?

As well as introducing a new romance, this book continues the story of the war against the Bak-lal. Some Bak-lal factory queens, gigantic creatures, decades ago buried themselves underground on Earth and are now emerging to take over. The women the aliens bond mate with will be our savior, or they will die trying. They have powers and the aliens are beginning to suspect their importance.

How many books are planned for the series?

Four in total. The next is Talia’s story. I won’t mention her mate as it may be a ménage.

What genre would you say Intimidator is and what sets your book apart for fans of the genre?

It’s erotic soap opera scifi :D

What sets it apart?

Great world-building, a complex and tasty plot. Great action scenes – I love battles and I don’t skip the blood and guts too much. A wounded hero is a man I feel sorry for, and I love showing him dragging himself up from the ground where he lies so he can save his woman. The women and their powers all figure in the final book. So each story weaves itself into the tapestry by the end.

What was your favorite scene to write in Intimidator?

Talia arriving in the forest when Willow is in deep trouble. Lol I’m sure you wanted sex or romance but I adore action and she wowed me with how she strode in. The scene just unfurled as I wrote it. For a love /sex scene, I’d pick the erotic scene with Willow and Stom when she almost shoots off his finger. Boy, was he annoyed!

What was the hardest scene to write for Intimidator?

Maybe the final body painting scene? I wanted less sex and some delicate cultural details to show the depth of the emotions.

What is your favorite line or quote from Intimidator?

This one’s a bit silly, rather than romantic, but I have a quirky sense of humor.

She blinked into his face and recognized him by his scent before his voice or face registered. Stom. She inhaled again, aghast at her reaction, but wanting to wriggle like a puppy whose owner has arrived, or like a woman who has just the right man pinning her to a tree.

Writing.......

Do you recall how your interest in writing originated and what made you decide to pursue it as a career?

I think my passion for reading made me want to write and I really wanted to earn money from home. This was a great way to do it.

What inspires you to put the pen to paper or fingers to the keyboard?

The love of writing. I do love making my ideas turn into books. Some scenes just beg you to write them. But I also find that reader feedback now spurs me on a LOT. Without that I lose interest. If a book isn’t grabbing readers it makes me sad and then I get distracted and end up writing a different genre lol I have author ADD, my co-writer Sorcha Black tells me.

What are some of the elements in/of your writing process?

Thinking, writing down the main elements or key scenes, Thinking some more by doing repetitive boring housework. Writing down ideas again and doing little summaries. I find that all helps. One of the things that gets missed is that everyone has to think before they write and that can take weeks, days, to happen.

Are you a Plotter or a Panster?

A bit of both but plotting in too much detail stifles me.

Have you released anything under a different pen name, and if so, is there any difference between them?

Yes. My first books were fantasy without any erotic scenes.

What's next for you?

I just also released an erotic parody called Squirm – virgin captive of the billionaire biker tentacle monster. Yes, I did indeed do that. Lol It’s a very crazy story.

As one reader put it: “I laughed so hard I scared my cat, my neighbors, and potentially the Russian mob who may or may not live on the same street as me. I'm pretty sure I have scared away all alien tentacle monsters for a five block radius.”

I’m planning a sequel as it’s really hit the spot with readers. So many people are telling me it’s hilarious. I never knew I could do humor. Now I do. :)

Is there anything you’d like to add or say to your fans?

Thank you! You’re the reason I keep writing. Without people cheering me on , I’d be so lost!

Personal questions......

Now I know this is like asking you to choose between your own children, but out of all your amazing characters, who is your favorite and why?

Klaus. From Pierced Hearts. He’s very alpha, a sadistic Dom, and he’s got flaws, but he has morals and he does care. He thinks before he does bad things. lol

Are there any of your stories or characters that hold a special place in your heart?

They all do. I guess my steampunk stories were my first series. I love the world I built for that series.

If the book or series had to have a theme song, what would it be?

I’m awful at songs. Sorry!

One curious fact about the book – it’s set in Australia and not far from where I live.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for taking time to answer some questions. Congratulations on the new book and I can't wait for everyone to read it!
