Thank you so much for sitting down with Toot's for an interview. If you don't mind, I have some questions for you about your new book One Lucky Night, your contribution to it, Lucky Break, and your process for our budding authors as well as fans.
So first off, your story, Lucky Break, is part of a new book, One Lucky Night. Let's talk about the book as a whole....
In your own words, what is One Lucky Night about?
We have five couples who are connected to this Irish bar in one way or another. They’ve known each other for a while, some for years, some only for months, but they’ve never taken a chance on their relationships. Until the night of our story, of course, where this mysterious older Irishman gives them the push they need.
Who came up with the idea?
Ana Blaze came up with this concept.
How did you become involved with it?
Ana and I worked together on a similar project last year called Love and Other Games, but it featured athletes at the Winter Olympic Games. OLN author Melinda Dozier was also on LAOG. Ana came up with the idea and invited me and Melinda, as well as Grace and Connie.
Did you find it challenging to write with a specific theme you had to adhere to or did you find it easier?
I actually really enjoy it! We could do anything with our characters and story as long as it fit on this night and location, so there’s still plenty of room to play with.
Your story ……
Can you tell us a bit about your specific contributing story, Lucky Break?
Derek is a chef at the bar and is surprised to discover “Andy the handyman,” who his boss called to fix the dishwasher, is his sorta-high-school-girlfriend Andrea. Four years ago, a traumatic event separated them, but sparks reignite that night at the bar.
How does your story, Lucky Break, fit into the theme of the book?
Derek and Andrea have probably known each other the longest out of all the couples. When they’re forced to talk to each other, sparks reignite, but they’re resistant for different reasons. The old man who appears in all the stories gives Andrea a bit of a pep talk that pushes them in the right direction.
What was your favorite scene to write for your hero or heroine in Lucky Break?
My favorite is when Andrea gives Derek a hard time and he calls her on it. Here’s a little taste:
He turned and picked up an order waiting for him on the counter. With his back still to her, he asked, "Did you like your dinner?"
She didn't want to tell him exactly how perfect it had been. Admitting that felt like giving in, somehow. "The egg was undercooked."
Spinning toward her, his face went from surprise to understanding all too quickly. "Liar."
Shrugging, she decided to give him this one. "It was great. Thank you very much."
What was the hardest scene to write for Lucky Break?
Probably when Derek and Andrea fight! They so obviously belong together that it really hurt me to hurt them for so long.
What is your favorite line or quote from Lucky Break?
"There is no point. It's just coffee."
But, of course, it doesn’t make sense until you read the story :-)
Writing.......
Do you recall how your interest in writing originated and what made you decide to pursue it as a career?
I had always written short stories but had this ridiculous idea that longer fiction was too “epic” and out of my reach. Until someone in my writing group invited to me join NaNoWriMo. I was in town for a months-long work project and didn’t have any friends or anything to do outside of work, so I figured why not try it? I was hooked.
What inspires you to put the pen to paper or fingers to the keyboard?
There’s really no any other reason besides I absolutely love it. I’ve always been fascinated by stories - and creating stories along with their characters and worlds is addictive.
What are some of the elements in/of your writing process?
Wine and twizzlers! :-) My writing process is constantly changing depending on the story, but there is one little quirk: I listen to audiobooks in my car instead of the radio. I have to listen to something of a similar tone/atmosphere to what I’m writing at the time. So I can’t listen to some sexy paranormal romances when I’m trying to write a YA story, for example.
Are you a Plotter or a Panster?
Mostly a pantser, though I sometimes do a Beat Sheet (See Blake Snyder’s Save the Cat)
Have you released anything under a different pen name, and if so, is there any difference between them?
I write YA and work in the YA industry under the name Sarah Nicolas, but don’t have anything out yet.
What's next for you?
Good question :-) I’m working on a few things but I’m not sure what’s going to dominate my attention next!

I just want to thank everyone for all the love and support they’ve shown this book!
Personal questions......
Now I know this is like asking you to choose between your own children, but out of all your amazing characters, who is your favorite and why?
Haha, I’m still madly in love with Erik from Once Upon a Darkness. He’s kinda like Jayne from Firefly and I adore him. One day, he’ll get his own story told.
Are there any of your stories or characters that hold a special place in your heart?
I have one that I’ve been working on a while. It’s a friends to lovers story and the characters are so close to my heart. One day, I’ll figure out the right way to finish it. :-)
If the book or series had to have a theme song, what would it be?
I can only speak for my story, but one that really stuck with me was “Just Give Me a Reason” by Pink.
Lastly, seeing the stories all take place in a Pub, do you know any good Pub jokes?
Two guys walk into a bar. The third one ducks.
