Review : My Renaissance by Julia Chambers (Erotica)

Book Blurb

In the sharp bright Spring of 1981 a young girl with flaxen hair and an open heart arrives at Malpensa, a shabby airport on the industrial outskirts of Milan. Brimful of excitement and trepidation and wholly unprepared, she has come to teach English to the sophisticates of this Northern Italian city, and of course receives a sentimental and sexual education of her own ...This elegant erotica is Julia's homage to the genre and a love letter to Italy.

Toot's Review

My Renaissance by Julia Chambers is a sophisticated recounting of one woman’s sexual exploits through the years.

In the beginning of the book, the author basically states that she wanted to write some erotica for woman by a woman and boy did she deliver. From the get-go, the book is full of the retelling of her memories through the years of her sexual encounters. It starts off with our main character, on her fiftieth birthday, running into one of her past flings. She refers to him as “the American”. They have a quick sit-down to recall old times but it comes off more as the man groveling at her feet to get a little something-something while he’s on a business trip. He wants to rekindle what they had but she’s not interested. Honestly, if an old flame talked to me like this man had, I’d have slapped him silly and walked way. She kinda does the same except there’s no slapping, LOL.

Anywho, as the book progresses we are taken back in time to follow our main character’s life up until now. We are told tales from the beginning of her sexual education in Milan all the way through to her first meeting with “the American”. The story is basically memoire after memoire of all of her sexual encounters through her adult life.

I personally was not a huge fan of the book because I just couldn’t get into the main character. She comes off as a bit narcissistic for me. She is all about having sex and not really into anything deeper. She loves how fabulous she looks at fifty and how her body will always look great because she hasn’t had any kids. Think of an eternal bachelor but as a woman. Like I said, it wasn’t for me. I like to delve deep (no pun intended) and really connect with my characters in an erotica. You know what they say, for women it’s more cerebral than physical. There is no HEA or anything like that for this story and it’s not meant to have one. Like I said, it’s a recounting of her life up to when we first meet “the American”.

If you’re looking for an erotica that’s chalk full of sex from a female’s perspective, wham bam thank you sir and you’re not into much story (just gimme the sexy details)……give My Renaissance by Julia Chambers a shot!

3 outta 5!
