Review : Awaking (The Naturals #1) by Madeline Freeman (YA)

Book Blurb

Morgan Abbey's life is about to change. Just weeks before the beginning of her senior year, a mysterious stranger approaches Morgan with information that turns her world on end: First, the psychic ability she believes she has just been pretending to have since middle school might actually be real. Second, her mother, who disappeared abruptly and completely almost a decade ago, might still be alive. Morgan finds herself drawn into a centuries-old struggle involving a shadowy group with incredible powers. The Veneret have quietly coexisted alongside the common people of the world for centuries. Now they believe it is time for them to reclaim their former positions of power-and that Morgan is the key to their victory. Every victory comes at a price-but is it one that Morgan will be willing to pay?

Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

This is the first book in the Naturals Series. Morgan Abbey is a senior in high school. She and her father have been carrying on after her mother disappeared ten years ago. When suspicion was thrown onto her father for the disappearance, Morgan’s life became difficult. Morgan has one friend Clarissa and they have gone into business together. Morgan foretells fortunes and horoscopes, while Ris does the scheduling of each client.

Morgan is special and she learns just how special she is one night at a fellow student, Corbin’s, party. Morgan is drawn to an unknown boy at the party. His name is Kellen and he claims to have information about her mother. She agrees to meet him the next day to learn more. He also has information about her that will turn her world upside down. She is what is called a natural. Her birth has been foretold to help the Veneret come out of hiding, no longer fearing for their lives.

Her powers get stronger and more naturals are being discovered. However, things turn where intentions may not be what they appear. Morgan doesn’t know who to trust and what the truth really is.

This story was a fast read and completely drew me in. I was intrigued with the storyline and the characters. I was trying to unravel the mystery of Morgan’s mother and what was really going on. There were a lot of twists and turns. In fact I felt angry for Morgan when Kellen and Orrick tried to manipulate her into doing what they wanted. I was glad to see she was stronger.

I also love the ambiguity of Morgan’s feelings toward the new friends in her life. The reader isn’t quite sure who she might end up with. It kept me guessing. In fact I still don’t know. I am eager to read the next book in the series to see what happens next. I give it a 4 out of 5.
