Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

Allie is back staying at the lake with her father. The lake where IT happened. The IT that she refuses to talk about. Her parents are worried so she is spending the summer with her father and his new wife. They want her to move passed this but it is impossible. Allie’s guilt and devastation are crushing her.

Allie is not thrilled to be there. She fears the water and continues to have flash backs to that horrible day last summer. She is angry at her father and doesn’t want to be here with him. He also keeps pushing her to go on the boat and swim. He won’t leave her alone which is what she wants. She also hates her new step-brother, Nick. He goes out of his way to be a complete jerk.

Her world changes when she meets mysterious Damien. She is drawn to him and he pushes her toward healing. She kicks and screams the entire way but she gives in to him. They bond over her past and pain. Allie knows that Damien understands. His pain is visible. He has secrets of his own that he hides. His guilt is as overwhelming as hers. Trust and understanding is what they need to have when the past comes knocking.

This story had a lot of angst and heart break. Both main characters experienced loss and tragedy where they were blamed for the event. The author makes their guilt almost tangible. The characters were tortured and the author uses that to pull you in. I wanted to read more about their stories and see how they make their way to the other side of their torment.

I liked the twist that Damien’s past brings and how Nick and friends help out in the end. I couldn’t wait to learn Damien’s story and see how things turned out. I give it a 4 out of 5.
