Review : Fields of Elysium (Fields of Elysium #1) by A.B. Whelan (YA)

Book Blurb

How can love mend a heart full of hate?

Small town girl, Molly Bennett, moves to Los Angeles where she becomes an outsider while attending Beverly Hills High School. It seems life cannot be any more dreadful. Then one day after school, something magical happens. On a secluded hike in the Hollywood Hills, Molly chases her disobedient mutt and only friend into a hidden cavern. She stumbles upon a strange glimmering gateway that transports her to Arkana, a planet that is the cradle of an advanced human race. There, teenagers navigate amazing flying vehicles, compete in perilous games for glory, and possess supernatural powers. While Molly tries to wrap her mind around this unbelievable discovery, she meets the alluring and mysterious Victor Sorren. He is a Sentinel Apprentice, whose hatred toward people from Earth is beyond understanding. Yet every time Victor unpredictably saves Molly's life, his heart draws closer to hers, no matter how much he tries to fight against it. It further complicates things that their growing friendship is strictly forbidden. Earth people are prohibited in Arkana, yet Molly continues to cross through the portal to Arkana to see Victor. Torn between their double lives, they go down a dangerous path, from where there is no return and multiple endings.

Fields of Elysium is a suspenseful romantic tale full of forbidden secrets, danger, deception, and the never-ending fight for true love.

Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

Molly Bennett has moved from New Jersey to L. A. She has earned some freedom since they no longer live in the town famous for the Hindenburg kidnapping. So while on a hike with her dog Pandora, a squirrel crosses their path and Pandora chases after it into the woods. Molly chases her through the woods and finds her in a cave. Pandora refuses to come when she calls. Once inside the cave, Molly notices a type of light in the rear of the cave. It glows and shifts. When she approaches it, it changes from blue to white and sucks her in.
She lands on the floor of a cave. Looking around, she realizes it isn’t the same cave she was previously in. She ends up in a new place and has no clue where this new place is. While Molly and her dog explore this new place, they come across a group of boys her age. One of the boys, Victor, shows hostility towards her. She is confused as to why. She spends a lovely day with them swimming and camping. She begins to believe she has discovered something extremely important.
That day, however, changes her life forever. She has stumbled into a new world, a secret world that exists where other humans live on it. The light that brought her there has to be a wormhole. She finds that she can’t tell anyone about her discovery or she may put this new world in jeopardy along with her new friends. Her confusion over Victor’s treatment of her and the pressure to keep this huge secret spells over into her behavior at home. Her parents are stumped at her changed behavior. Her father becomes suspicious and she has to be careful.
Victor continually shows contempt for her even as her feelings for him grow. How is she going to get through all the confusion as her life becomes chaotic. She tries to juggle both worlds and a difference in time. The time begins to wear on her as she does her best to keep up.
This story was extremely unique. The author did a fantastic job creating this new world. It was fun as a reader to watch Molly discover this world and how she figures out what it means for her. She struggles with this huge secret and the author’s words convey exactly how she feels. The reader also feels all the hurt she feels when Victor continually rejects her.
I do think there was a lot going on in this book and some parts were bit confusing. I didn’t understand the neighbor’s role and the obsessive behavior of her parents was a bit over the top. The ending was, however, sigh worthy. I am anxious to read the next book. I give it a 3 out of 5.
