Book Blurb

Child prodigy and now Doctor of Anthropology, Isabella Mumphrey, is about to lose her job at the university. In the world of publish or perish, her mentor’s request for her assistance on a dig is just the opportunity she’s been seeking. If she can decipher an ancient stone table—and she can—she’ll keep her department. She heads to Guatemala, but drug trafficking bad guys, artifact thieves, and her infatuation for her handsome guide wreak havoc on her scholarly intentions.

He’s deep undercover as a jaguar tracker and sometimes jungle guide, but the appearance of a beautiful, brainy anthropologist heats his Latin blood taking him on a dangerous detour that could leave them both casualties of the jungle.

Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

This is an Isabella Mumphrey adventure. She is losing the funding for her department at the university she teaches at and has no idea what she is going to do. A family friend, Dr. Victor Martin, calls and invites her to Guatemala to help decipher a Mayan tablet he found. He agrees to split the money he has been offered with her. She takes a sabbatical from the university and hops on a plane.

However more is going on at the dig site and Tino Kosta is posing as her guide. He is undercover DEA and the lovely Dr. Mumphrey is his ticket near the site. He is trying to keep his cover and it is a difficult task as Isabella is smart and doesn’t miss much. She is constantly questioning him and his actions.

Surprisingly he finds himself becoming protective of her. She seems so innocent and naïve that he decides to remain as near to her as he possibly can. He doesn’t trust the archeologists that she is working with, especially with drug runners so close to the site. There seems to be a connection between the runners and the dig and it leaves Tino uneasy. He and Isabella don’t know who to trust except each other and keeping her safe becomes harder for Tino to do.

This book had an interesting storyline. However, it took me a while to really get into it. I had a difficult time with Isabella’s character. I didn’t really connect with her. In fact she annoyed me in the beginning. Her naivety seemed a bit unrealistic after being on her own all her life. I had a difficult time believing her. If I don’t connect with the character I can’t get into the story. The story is what saved the book for me. I give it a 3 out of 5.
