ARC Review : First Impression: A Shadow Maven Paranormal by Pauline Creeden (YA)

Book Blurb

Chira Kelly thought she didn’t need anyone…until she met Ben.

Because of one ugly rumor, Chira lives as an outcast at her school. Which is fine with her, because she works better alone. Always has, always will. And at least she has her one and only true friend, Tasha. When Tasha insists that they join a group to visit a possibly haunted abandoned old schoolhouse, she's wary, but joins her friend. Because of that decision, their lives are in jeopardy as a malevolent spirit targets the group. Tragedies and accidents pick them off one by one, and Chira finds herself drawn to the one person who can see the truth. But can he protect her?

Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

Chira Kelly is a junior at Jackson Hall Preparatory School. Her father’s insurance money is paying for her tuition. She lives with her mother and step-father Rob. She is also allowed to attend because of her scholarship and Rob has a job there. So her social life is non existent. She is the poor girl going to the rich school. She is a loner and only hangs out with one person, Tasha. Chira only has a small group of people she cares about and she is happy with it.

Ben Oscuro is new to the school and Chira shows him around. In fact, they have most of their classes together. He is quiet and a loner like Chira. One night they both get talked into going to check out the Old Schoolhouse with a group of others. Chira arrives with Tasha and Ben goes with his cousin Matt. The plans are for a Halloween party and the House is an excellent spot. The group of ten students split into two groups. One group including Ben and Matt head upstairs while the others check out the main floor. Chira’s group hears weird noises and witnesses a ghost screaming in the kitchen. Tasha freaks out and run from the house. An accident occurs and also starts to happen to the others that investigated the main floor. Ben becomes Chira’s bodyguard and is determined to protect her. He walks with her everywhere and is determined to find the truth about the so called curse of the Old Schoolhouse.

This is the first book in the Shadow Maven Series. It introduces the characters and sets the tone. I liked both Ben and Chira together. They seem to have great chemistry and their connection is genuine. The storyline was interesting, but sad. I hated seeing so much tragedy over a short time. The ending wasn’t what I expected. The author did a nice job keeping the real story hidden until she wanted it exposed. I give it a 4 out of 5.
