Toot's Review
This is why I love spring, all the best freakin’ books bloom!
Patricia Briggs releases another winner in her ever popular Mercy Thompson series called Night Broken. In this latest installment, Mercy has to face off with her most evil foe yet, her husband Adam’s ex wife, Christy and her crazy one night stand stalker.
Christy is a totally spoiled middle-aged princess who gets the tables turned on her when her one night stand starts stalking her. When Christy realizes that she’s in danger, she calls Adam for help and soon worms her way back into his house and right into her old role in Adam’s life with Mercy looking on in bewilderment. As the pack takes sides and feelings come to the surface, Mercy must dig deep for strength but as things unravel, Mercy also realizes that Christy’s stalker isn’t what he seems. To stop him, Mercy must call in all her favors and gather her Scooby gang around her (pun totally intended) to save not only her arch nemesis but also the pack.
For those who haven’t been introduced to the world of Mercy Thompson, Mercy is a coyote walker who was raised by werewolves and is mated to the alpha of her local pack. Mercy is also a VW mechanic and runs a repair shop. Her heritage is Native American and is a strong theme throughout the series. Along with living in the human world, she has a host of family and friends that include vampires, fae and a myriad of other supernatural creatures that will drop anything to come help battle whatever ill befalls our little coyote. All in all, if you love PNR/UF you’re gonna love Mercy Thompson.
As for the book, I really enjoyed catching up with Mercy again. The underlying theme to the Night Broken story was that of family: his, hers and theirs. It’s also chalk full of action, strife, family drama, self sacrifice, and reunions. Yep, all our favorite characters make an appearance to lend a hand. It was almost like Homecoming week, LOL. Basically we have Christy causing drama for the married couple and she is making noises at wanting Adam back while causing a rift in the pack. Christy’s stalker is anything but human and will stop at nothing to have her. Coyote is weaving threads to make events happen and a Grey Lord wants The Walking Stick back. Damn, what more do you want???
Ok all seriousness aside, yes I love Mercy, yes I recommend the book to anyone and everyone, yes it’s safe for teens to read (totally not steamy) and yes I love Mercy (yep it’s worth repeating). Who doesn’t love a strong kick-ass women and the eclectic supernatural’s who love her.
