Review : The Doctor by Jennifer Bull (YA)

Book Blurb

After the attack at his father’s amusement park, Daniel cannot believe what he’s capable of. He tries to lock himself away and protect those he loves… until he finds out that the monster within did not get there by accident, and the one responsible didn’t stop with him.

Sarah remembers the stories her mother used to tell her; of a place where the sun shone brightly and bird songs filled the air; a place where home wasn’t a cramped cell; a place where your own mind didn’t try to torment you. She wants nothing more than to be free of this living hell… even if that means she won’t get out alive.

Jack is fed up of chasing the serial killer with no name, whose favourite game is creating monsters out of living people. He just wants to catch him before anyone else gets hurt… but reaching that goal becomes much more dangerous than anyone could have guessed.

When these three strangers find their lives colliding on an island from which there is no escape, they must work together if they want to survive; but how do they fight against a force that doesn't really exist?

Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

In this paranormal story three separate characters are drawn together to stop a serial killer known as the Doctor. Daniel is a young man with a secret. He turns into a werewolf when he loses control. He almost kills his friends on Halloween night when the werewolf comes out to play.

Jack is a paranormal investigator. He has been working diligently trying to find and stop the Doctor. He has had to clean up after too many crimes caused by the Doctor. He is borderline obsessed with finding him.

Sarah is trapped and tormented by her father. He keeps her locked away and plays games with her trying to break her. He allows her the chance to escape only to catch her again. She remains his prisoner.

All three characters come together when Jack realizes where the Doctor is. He and Daniel head to the old house. Once they enter they are transferred to an island full of mist. Let the games begin. The Doctor knows they are there. He uses Sarah to manipulate Jack and Daniel.

Jack and Sarah figure out who the Doctor is and the secret is shocking. The Doctor’s abilities are impressively strong. They only have one chance to defeat him.

I am a big fan of paranormal storylines. Daniel’s story was my favorite and I wanted him to overcome the werewolf and learn to control it. Being cursed with a werewolf with no control was devastating to him and the reader roots for him. Sarah’s character is a true victim and you witness her torment. You want her to escape and feel her frustration when she is caught again.

The story gets confusing once the Doctor is found and it’s revealed how he is doing everything. There were places in the story I had a difficult time picturing the scenes in my head. I didn’t have a connection. The ending was surprising and almost too confusing. It was okay. I give it a 3 out of 5.
