Emblazed (The Division Chronicles #2)

After all the preparations, Nicholai’s warriors stand on the threshold of warfare, the demons entering the realm in battalions and the world unknowingly depending on the army’s success to continue intact. But the battle is only the beginning of deadly struggles, and the soldiers will soon realize how little they know, how many things are at stake, and how much they have to lose.

Love, hate, hope, despair, anguish, joy… The journey is a gauntlet of emotion and combat, threatening their resolve as much as their lives.

Will their training and ties be enough, or will the complications and the forthcoming evil forever cripple the world’s last hope of survival?

Book Excerpt

AJ sensed him there, standing wordlessly some feet in the distance, just like she always recognized his presence when he lingered near. She absorbed the comfort and happiness he brought her – not that she’d admit that out loud – before sighing and speaking. “It’s called making a bed, Julius. It’s pretty commonplace.”

He didn’t push away from the doorframe, instead leaning further against it while he continued to observe her. “Sweetheart, nothing’s commonplace when you do it.”

Hearing the grin and affection in his voice, she smiled, peeking at him over her shoulder. “Is that a compliment or an insult?”

He gazed upward to stare at the ceiling with a thoughtful expression, then returned his attention to her, his shrug carefree. “Both.”

She smirked. “Sweet talker.”

“Odd ball.” He finally moved from the threshold, unhurriedly advancing toward her. “You know, most people make their beds in the morning. Not ten o’clock at night.”

She snorted. “Yeah. I’m gonna make my bed as soon as I roll out of it at six AM. I wouldn’t be making it now if I didn’t have to wrestle the sheet back on four times a night.” Finally setting her pillow in its position, she turned to him with an unashamed grin.

He chuckled, his adoration plain, and brushed a lock of hair from her face. “You’re one of a kind, you know that?”

“Compliment or insult?” she teased again.

“Compliment.” He smiled, cupping her cheek. “Definitely a compliment.”

“Sweet talker,” she repeated, standing on her tiptoes to press a kiss to his lips. Wrapping her arms around his neck, his circling her waist, she dove into the moment, reveling in the wonderful sensations only Julius incited. Safety. Warmth. Passion. So many more she couldn’t quite put a name to, the combination too heady and consuming to adequately decipher. It was simply a Julius effect, and its wonder had no equal in her life. Gradually breaking away, she knowingly lifted an eyebrow. “You didn’t come here just to make fun of me over my bed-making habits.”

“Maybe I came up here just to kiss you.”

“If that were the case, dear Julius, you wouldn’t have waited until I kissed you.”

Narrowing his eyes, he barely restrained his smirk at her forwardness and how well she’d grown to understand him in their time together. “You have a point.” He stepped back from her embrace, grasping her hand in his. “Come on. We have a mission.”

“A mission?” Her brow furrowed, though she made no move to retrieve her palm from his, following him in confusion as he neared the hallway. “At ten o’clock at night?”

“I believe we already covered the time in this conversation, AJ.” He made a clucking noise with his tongue, shaking his head in mock disappointment. “You really need to keep up with matters a bit more.”

She glared at the back of his head, lips thinning despite her vexing boyfriend’s inability to see her from his location. Realizing the futility of her frustrated efforts, she clenched the fingers he clutched, smiling in accomplishment at his grunt of discomfort. “Yeah, we covered it, but in household chore way. Not in a mission way. What could we possibly have to do this late at night?”

He sent her an amused glance – one she deemed condescending, particularly after the physical hint of her annoyance – while tugging her through the doorway. “You do realize it isn’t ten o’clock everywhere, right?”

“Of course I realize that! I’m not a moron!”

“I never said you were…”

She growled, steeling her feet against the floor and prying her hand from his. “You didn’t have to. Your little grin said it all for you.”

His stare revealed sincere bewilderment – maybe a speck of frustration as well – and his arm dropped to his side. “So let me get this straight. You’re angry at me… because I smiled at you?”

Her eyes widened in fury, one finger raising to point at his chest while her left fist braced against her hip. “Don’t try to turn this around like I’m crazy!”

He scrunched his forehead, gaze traveling up and down her form while he held his hands out, as if silently offering his evidence.

She groaned, unhappy, turning away from him to rein in her irritation. For several seconds, she simply scanned her room, livid exhale after livid exhale falling from her lips, but the attempts did little to calm her turmoil, Julius actually flinching when her focus again landed on him. “It’s the grin you used. It’s the same one that was on your face when you drove into New Mexico, and I was surprised the facility was stationed here. Like I’m the dumbest person in the world and your number one source of entertainment.”

Instantly, his expression softened. “You can’t possibly think that I think that way?”

She just glared at him.

“Look, I’m not gonna lie.” He approached her, smiling tenderly. “You do amuse me, but not because I think you’re stupid. You’re… animated. And quirky. But not stupid. And I get it’s late, and no matter what time zone we’re entering, it’s ten o’clock here and we’re handing over sleeping hours, but Nicholai insists we need to go now.”

She kept pinched eyes on him, but her posture loosened a bit.

He laughed, reaching for her hand once more. “See? Animated. I can pretty much watch the wheels in your head turn.”

“Does that make you my mental stalker, too?”

Processing the playful edge of her words, he kissed her knuckles and led her into the hall. “Trust me, sweetheart. I have no desire to wander through your mind. I can’t imagine all the weird things I’d encounter.”

She tilted her head to the side, smiling. “Compliment or insult?”

Smirking over his shoulder, he caught her eyes with his. “Insult.”

Essenced (The Division Chronicles #1)

Years ago, demons were forced out of the earth’s realm by a band of supernatural fighters, banished from the place and its people in the aftermath of a horrific war. It should’ve ended there – would’ve – if not for the final demon’s claw snagging on the open portal. What felt like victory became only a reprieve, the winning warriors understanding that the tear would spread, and the demons eventually would escape exile. It was only a matter of time, and a need for future defense – a question of genetics and essences, magic and power.

Now, centuries later, a new army must bind together – one of teenagers with inhuman potentials and abilities…

AJ went to bed Sunday night an average teenage girl, clumsy and athletically lacking. So when she wakes up Monday morning with super-strength, she does what any rational person would do: She goes into denial. When a smoking hot guy in a suit shows up, rambling about the end of the war and demons spilling through some kind of rift, she refuses to listen, telling herself he’s insane. Except weird things just won’t quit happening, and the guy keeps popping up in her life, trying to explain the changes suddenly happening within her. Is she crazy, or is this guy… not so crazy after all?

Character & Author Interview

Connie: Hey, everyone! I’m the author of Essenced, the first book of The Division Chronicles, and I’m sitting here with two of the characters from the story. If you guys would introduce yourselves?

Isaac: *nods once to audience* Hey! I’m Isaac.

Clint: *scowls at audience* Clint.

Connie: That was a little impersonal, Clint…

Clint: *shrugs* I didn’t want to be here in the first place. I happen to think saving the world is more important than promoting your little books.

Issac: *smirks* Watch it, buddy. We’re in those little books.

Connie: *glares at Clint* And I’m the author of those little books. I could kill you, you know.

Clint: You have that power
I won’t deny
You wield me like a toy
Through every hour
That passes by
Curving my life for joy

Connie: *blinks* That’s a very bland way of seeing things.

Isaac: Well, he’s a bland guy.

Connie: Yes, well… On with the interview. I’d like to start with… *reaches for pen behind her ear* Where’s my… *glowers at Issac* Isaac? My pen?

Isaac: *clears throat, shrugs* Yeah, sure thing. *retrieves pen from pocket and hands it to Connie*

Connie: Well, I was gonna start with some of the more elaborate questions, but I’m guessing unfamiliar readers could be really confused by now. Here’s the deal. These characters are Essenced, and while that essence gives them superhuman qualities, it also comes with a few side effects. Every pack of Essenced has at least one. Isaac here *gestures* is alpha of the Dragon-Essenced pack, and they are… thieving.

Isaac: Hey! It’s not like I can help it!

Connie: And Mr.-Bright-and-Vivid there is alpha of the Necromancer-Essenced. He’s a lot of laughs, as you can tell.

Clint: I’m effective. That’s what matters.

Connie: He’s morbid, and it shows in the random poetry he breaks into. You’ve already read an example of his verse.

Clint: *sighs* Can we just move this along?

Connie: We’ll move this along when I’m good and ready, Clint.

*Isaac and Clint stare at Connie for a few seconds.*

Connie: …Okay, I’m ready.

Clint: You just did that to prove a point.

Connie: I did, indeed. *points her pen at Clint* Behave.

*Clint sighs in disgust, slouching in his chair with his arms crossed*

Connie: Okay, Isaac. What’s it like being the one member of the alphas that no one can trust with their belongings?

Isaac: Ouch. That was blunt. *clears throat* I don’t know. I mean, I don’t –want– to steal these things, and it’s embarrassing when people find out I’ve stolen something, but it isn’t like I can help it.

Connie: I’m guessing it’s even harder when you have an entire pack that you’re trying to keep in line.

Isaac: Oh, yeah. Definitely. I can’t exactly tell them to overcome their issues when mine have the best of me, but if I didn’t try to keep some civility, then the facility would be in chaos. *blushes* Actually, while we’re talking about it… *waves his hand around, then finally shrugs, holding out his palm*

Connie: Are those… *checks her purse* How did you steal my sunglasses while I was sitting right here?

Isaac: You’d be surprised what the right motivation can accomplish.

Connie: …And my sunglasses are the right motivation?

Issac: *shrugs* They have little diamonds on them.

Connie: *lifts eyebrow* They’re not real diamonds, Isaac.

Isaac: Still nice.

Connie: Okay. Clint. I’m gonna go out on a limb and say that your pack doesn’t sit around and sing camp songs…

Clint: If they did, I’d kill them.

Connie: …So what’s it like when it’s just your pack?

Clint: Quiet. Thoughtful.

Connie: You don’t talk much to each other?

Clint: I have to talk too much around these blabbermouths. *tips his chin toward Isaac*

Isaac: *laughs* Don’t let him fool you. He likes us.

Connie: I know he does. *focuses on Clint* In fact, I even remember you saying they were alright.

Clint: I was still…

Connie: SPOILERS!

Clint: *rolls eyes* Things were still… odd… at that moment. And in any event, it isn’t the soldiers I mind. It’s the tedious middle stuff. *gestures to himself* I wasn’t like this before the magic poured out and I changed from human. I don’t like being this way, and none of my pack members do. So anything that isn’t pushing along this war, I think is a waste of time. The sooner the war is over, the sooner I can stop with the emo stuff.

Isaac: *snorts* What if he plays with kittens and flies kites in his spare time? You know. When he isn’t Essenced up.

Connie: *smiles* With one of those giant lollipops?

Isaac: *points* Yes! And an Aqua Man t-shirt!

Clint: *groans* Idiots…

Connie: Well, did you? Before the magic?

Clint: *rolls eyes again* Yes. Of all the superheroes in the world, I picked Aqua Man.

Connie: …Mighty Mouse?

Clint: *glares at Connie* If you must know, my superhero of choice was Iron Man.

Isaac: *stares at Clint, then shakes his head* There’s way too much personality there.

Clint: Yeah, well, I used to have one of those. Besides. I’m getting better at being social with you all.

Isaac: Fair enough. I was always an X-Men fan myself. Gambit was the best.

Clint: *nods* Gambit was awesome.

Connie: Oh, wow. You guys are getting along. I kind of hate to break up the moment with more interview questions.

Clint: Just get on with it. I have responsibilities to get to.

Connie: Alright, then. You guys have dealt with your own packs, but there’s also a lot of alpha interaction going on in this story. Which alpha, side effects and all, do you feel has been the hardest to deal with?

Isaac: Well, aside from the face of optimism over there…

Clint: And the klepto….

Isaac: I’d say probably Bree. She’s a great girl and all, but that Napoleon Complex is hard to work around. I just said she was a little off-balance the other day in the weapons room, and she attacked me, man. Full attack. Marco had to pull her off.

Connie: And, of course, you didn’t mean she was little…

Isaac: No! Trust me. I know better than that. I just haven’t gotten the hang of talking to her yet, and I hope I don’t have any broken bones to deal with before I do.

Connie: And you, Clint?

Clint: Diego. Definitely Diego. I guess if I wasn’t… this way… I wouldn’t mind him so much, but that guy can talk your ear off. He’s entire personality is intense.

Isaac: So is yours.

Clint: But in completely opposite directions. Makes for uncomfortable situations.

Isaac: *shrugs* I can see that. *smirks at Connie* What about you? Who’s the hardest to deal with?

Connie: *smiles* There’s a reason why I haven’t interviewed Travis yet.

Isaac: Ah, yes. My skirt-chasing Incubus buddy. He seems to have that effect on women.

Connie: Understatement.

Clint: Well, you wrote him. *furrows brow* You wrote all of us. All of our issues are your fault.

Connie: *blushes* It’s only temporary. Just don’t die and the magic will fade.

Clint: That simple, huh?

Connie: Pretty much.

Isaac: …Except you control whether we die or not.

Connie: *glances around the room* I don’t like the turn this interview has taken.

Clint: You deal so easy all your desires
But when the fates twist
You squirm and shake, and so transpires
An irony they can’t resist

Connie: Lovely. Really.

Clint: *shrugs* If you don’t wrap this interview up, I can’t guarantee that it won’t happen again.

Connie: *shakes head* Angels. There are six angels in Essenced, and three more in Emblazed. What’s it been like having celestial beings suddenly among you?

Isaac: Intimidating, at first. Nicholai can be… unsettling. Then when we got into training, we met Vancent and Nathaniel…

Clint: They’re intent on the cause. It’s necessary.

Isaac: So is Rovolon. But that guy manages to smile here and there.

Clint: Irrelevant.

Isaac: *sighs* You are so depressing sometimes.

Clint: Goes with the territory.

Connie: Okay. Before we officially conclude this interview, is there anything you want to say to anyone who isn’t familiar with these books?

Isaac: Sure. Buy them.

Clint: What he said.

Connie: Eloquent, guys. I expect that from Clint, but you’re supposed to be a musician, Isaac.

Isaac: You want me to write them a song?

Connie: That’s not necessary, but a little…

Isaac: *pulls bongos from behind his seat and starts beating on them*
Show no hesitance!
Go get Essenced!
Noooooooooooooooooow!

Connie: *raises eyebrow* Where did you get bongos?

Isaac: *sets bongos on the floor and rubs the back of his neck* There was this music store that had some instruments out front…

Connie: *holds up hand* Stop! Just… Return it. Now.

Isaac: …But we’re doing an interview.

Connie: Interview’s over. Go before I have to report you.
Isaac: *sighs* Fine. You try to be creative…

Clint: I wasn’t that impressed. My poetry is better.

Isaac: You wish.

Clint: I observe. You only rhymed once and it wasn’t a perfect one.

Isaac: Oh, so, your essence gives you rhymes you couldn’t have thought of without it, and suddenly you’re the expert?

Connie: He’s actually right, Isaac. It wasn’t that great of a rhyme.

Isaac: *looks back and forth between Connie and Clint* You people have no taste. *leaves to return bongos*
Connie: Anything you’d like to add Clint?

Clint: Nope.

Connie: *shakes head* Okay. Well, Emblazed should officially be for sale as of February 24th, and in celebration of that, I’m planning a giveaway for each of the five days of this book tour (24th-28th) through my Twitter account. So please go check out the page, and you might win something. Also, if you’re not familiar with the story, book one (Essenced) is scheduled to be free through the entire tour. You can catch up without paying a penny to download it. So really, what do you have to lose?

Clint: Your dignity.

Connie: I thought you didn’t have anything to add.

Clint: *smirks* I changed my mind.

Connie: *sighs* Thanks for joining us, guys! Hope you give the books a try!

Author Info

Connie L. Smith spends far too much time with her mind wandering in fictional places. She reads too much, likes to bake, and will be forever sad that she doesn’t have fairy wings. And that she can’t swing dance. When she isn’t reading or writing, there’s a good chance she’s goofing off with her amazing, wonderful, incredible, fabulous nieces and nephew, or listening to music that is severely outdated. She has her BA from Northern Kentucky University in Speech Communication and History (she doesn’t totally get the connection either) and likes to snap photos. Oh, and she likes apples a whole big bunch.
