Book Blurb
Being rescued by a good-looking, bad-boy firefighter isn't how Samantha Bennett expected to start her stay in Knights Bridge, Massachusetts. Now she has everyone's attention—especially that of Justin Sloan, her rescuer, who wants to know why she was camped out in an abandoned old New England cider mill.
Samantha is a treasure hunter who has returned to Knights Bridge to solve a 300-year-old mystery and salvage her good name. Justin remembers her well. He's the one who alerted her late mentor to her iffy past and got her fired. But just because he doesn't trust her doesn't mean he can resist her. Samantha is daring, determined, seized by wanderlust—everything that strong, stoic Justin never knew he wanted. Until now…
Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala
Samantha Bennett is a treasure hunter specializing in Pirates. Her grandfather was well known around the treasure hunting world. Since his death Sam has been sorting through his belongings. She is shocked at the size of the job. No wonder her family appointed her for it. She comes across an interesting painting of an old mill that her grandfather had stored in a closet. It is the mill at Cider Brook. The painting coupled with the story about a local pirate that her grandfather gave her before he died sends her back to Cider Brook.
The last time she was in Cider Brook she was working for Duncan McCaffrey. That did not end well when he found out who she really was. She was fired for breaking his trust. Before she could do anything to make amends, he died of a heart attack. So with these two items, she is determined to go back to Cider Brook and redeem herself. She wanted to go in under everyone’s radar and do what she has to do.
Unfortunately a storm and a fire in the mill she was taking shelter in made that impossible. Justin Sloan, owner of the mill and volunteer fireman, saved her from the fire. He also knows who she really is. He is the unknown carpenter that Samantha blames part of her situation on. He is suspicious of her reasons for being here and doesn’t trust her.
In fact he almost becomes a thorn in her side and the attraction she has for him is distracting. He unsettles her. Not the best thing to deal with when she has other things she is looking for. Her search for the pirate rumored to have buried treasure in the area sends her into an unexpected direction and reveals secrets that she would have never guessed.
The search for a pirate was an interesting twist to this story. I also liked that Samantha had a history with the town and came in under suspicion. The author gave more than one secret to ferry out as the story evolved.
Justin was a typical male character and the author portrayed him in a real light. The friendships and family ties he had added to the storyline in a positive way. The only negative thing I found about this book was it would drag in places for me. It was a quiet romance and too little excitement for my taste. I give it a 3 out of 5.
