Ok first let me start by saying, holy cripes I haven't had a book suck me in as thoroughly as this one has in awhile. Rome is the bomb-digity!!! Oh damn, no pun intended. So let me give you a brief synopsis before I start gushing all over the monitor.
We first met Rome in the first book of the Marked Men series titled Rule. He is the big brother and eldest of the famed Archer boys. He is the quintessential All American Hero, think GI Joe. Not only was he big brother to the twins but he then enlisted in the Army right out of high school. He took to it like a fish in water. He became a hero and really felt like he had found his calling until one of his brothers' died. Everything he was fighting for overseas came crashing down around him. His identity became skewed but then he found it again when he was injured and returned home for rehab. He realized that his family was falling apart and he needed to be the glue that held them together but then he was sent back to the front lines and that's when everything went down hill. After years of fighting for his country, Uncle Sam decided Rome had had enough and chose to retire him but Rome wasn't ready. He returned home with PTSD and was definitely not the happy-go-lucky big brother everyone knew and loved.
Cora is the big sister no one saw coming. She's fiercely protective of all the Marked Men and their girls. She also runs the shop with an iron fist and loving hand. While at a BBQ, the boys crazy big brother shows up and starts making trouble. She's never really known the infamous Rome but she has no problem going gangster on his ass, if he doesn't back off her boys. While the two exchange words, Rome decides to leave the festivities to find his best friend, a bottle of Vodka. While conversing with his BFF at a local bar, Rome finds some real friends and some trouble. It's the trouble that he doesn't need. When he makes a second appearance at the bar, he gets trashed and the unlikely Cora comes to the rescue, in more ways then one.
Well that's the synopsis that I'm going to tell you, LOL. It's all true but I'm not going any further *evil cackle*. Why you ask? Simple, I really loved this story and to be honest, I really love the entire series but I digress. I am only giving you a twisted taste because I want to hook you into these books the way they have hooked me. Damn, Gina! *yes I totally did use a Martin phrase* I haven't slept in days because I'm gobbling these books up while trying to work!! What I really am growing to appreciate about this series is that Jay puts together couples that, at first glance, are completely opposite or wrong for each other but somehow they end up working out to be perfect. Granted I did see Rome and Cora together but who knew how broken each of them were and how perfect they'd be once they got together? I sure didn't although I'm not a fool and read romance like it's going out of style, so I knew they would eventually be perfect together, LOL.
Anywho, I guess the gist of my ramblings about the book is, BUY IT!!! I would say start with the first book, Rule and work your way up to this one because Rome has a lot of back story in the other books and to get the full experience of the character and how much he's changed by this book, you really need to read the others but with that being said, if you have already read the books, you're freakin' gonna love this one!!!! Rome is a God and Cora is his perfect pixie match. Now I totally have a book hangover, so I'm going back to bed. Buy the books, you won't be disappointed!
