Toot's Review
Sky is a typical seventeen year old girl with a BFF whom lives next door, a granola lovin' mother whom hates technology and she loves to kiss boys but unfortunately what's not so typical is the fact that when she does keep boys, she never feels anything, it's just sort of bleh for her. She knows she's attracted to guys, she just never feels a connection to them, unlike her slutty BFF whom after convincing her to dump home schooling and transfer to public high school, is now taking a class in Europe, ugggg! So our lovely Sky is starting a new school, without her BFF and thanks to her BFF's reputation, everyone thinks she's also a total slut. Ahhh the life of a teen. To boot, her mom totally hates technology and sugar *WTF* she feels totally cut off from the 21st century. The only good thing is, is when her moms goes away on retreats, she gets the place to herself and can go crazy baking cookies! Who doesn't love a good sugar induced coma, LOL.
While buying groceries one day, Sky sees a totally hot guy, Holder, also buying groceries. She immediately feels something for him but when he talks to her, he's a bit rude. She decides to leave as quickly as possible. He then follows her outside demanding to know her name. Scared out of her wits, they exchange names, more to get him to leave her alone than anything else but after she makes her escape, she can't help but sigh.
As luck or good writing would have it, the two keep meeting and she finds out he even goes to her school. What she doesn't know, is that even though everything seems new, it's not. These two share a horrible past together, only she doesn't remember it but he does.
So where do I start with this book.....let's see, let's start with emotions....I cried, I cheered, I gasped, I was surprised, I got all mushy with puppy love.
Actions...... I wanted to find my own "Hopeless" man-boy, I learned some new lingo.
Ok in all seriousness, cuz book reviews are totally serious stuff now, don't cha know! I knew this would be an NA book and I had heard a lot of buzz about the book but I honestly had no idea what I was in for. I tend to do that a lot with books I read. I don't like to read spoilers or reviews before I pick them up, so I can honestly say, I had no idea what I was in for and boy was I pleasantly surprised. The book is well written, has great teenage lingo, will make you believe in soul mates but best of all, deals with some very horrible topics yet is written so well, that the author doesn't have to go into graphic detail, just shows you the path and lets your mind come to the realization of what happened to Sky when she was a child. Yes, horribly, it deals with childhood sexual abuse but that's as much as I'm going to tell you because I don't want to ruin this wonderful book. If you can stomach the topic, please, please, please read this book. You won't regret it!
Losing Hope is the exact same story as Hopeless but whereas Hopeless is told from Sky's POV, Losing Hope is from Holder's POV. I definitely would not recommend reading this book without reading Hopeless first. Losing Hope sticks to the same timeline as Hopeless, therefore it does skip the filler and back-story and skips directly to major events. The author is assuming that you know the basic story, like I said it's more a companion to the original book. There is consistency in the book and you do feel that you're seeing the story from another POV but it's not really a book to be read as a standalone. You're mainly reading it to fill in some of the gaps from the original book and get some additional back-story. With all that being said, Losing Hope is Holder's story. We see what he went through with his sister and how he processed his relationship with Sky. My only critique would be that I had hoped to have more stories about the children and their friendship, like how they met? Also a little more stories with the parents would have been nice as well, like did they interact at all seeing their kids were BFF's? Anywho, with the addition of Losing Hope, the story, as a whole, isdefinitely more well rounded and gives the reader a much broader picture of the events.
