A POWER TO KILL

FBI agent Camellia "Mel" Wray is no stranger to violence but when an old friend is brutally murdered, she takes it personally. The case hits even closer to her heart when the best person to help with the investigation is Dr. Stefan Harper, the only man she ever loved-and lost. One look at the gorgeous medical expert and Mel realizes he's still impossible to resist-and still harboring a secret after all these years . . .

A POWER TO LOVE

Afraid Mel wouldn't accept him, Stefan never revealed his study of magical medicine or his abilities, instead allowing her to believe he'd been unfaithful. Now she's back in his life-and their mutual attraction burns hotter than ever. But when something dark and otherworldly threatens humans, Stefan must summon his mage powers to keep everyone safe. Will Mel be able to trust him again? Or will their love cost him even more than it did the first time?

Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

Special Agent Mel is on her way to visit an old friend when she comes upon the sheriff and deputies. They are investigating the death of Mel’s friend, Lucinda Bradford. The body was drained of most of her blood, strange marks are present on the body, and some unknown toxin has shown up in her blood. Mel is feeling guilty. She should have been here earlier and she could have prevented this. She gets herself cleared so she can work on the case in partnership with the sheriff.

The sheriff knows that the strange facts of this case are more than he can handle, so he calls Dr. Stephan Harper in on the case. Dr. Harper works for the Georgia Institute for Paranormal Research. He is used to strange things, being a mage himself. He also had a serious relationship with Mel that ended badly nine years ago. He couldn’t tell her about being a mage unless he was sure she would believe him and keep his secret. Her actions and words lead him to keep his secret and she left thinking he was cheating on her.

They come face to face on the case. Mel doesn’t want him working with her. She has moved on, so she keeps telling herself. She needs to stay focused and find Cinda’s killer and put them behind bars, then get on with her life. It did not include Stephan Harper.

The tension between them builds as the case progresses. The case also pulls Mel more into Stephan’s paranormal world, a world she refuses to believe in. The thing stalking the mundanes, or non-magic beings, of the town is nothing that Stephan has ever seen. Its strength is beyond a normal ghoul. He fears it’s possessed by a demon. He needs to figure out how to stop this new threat and keep Mel safe without revealing what he really is. Surviving this could be a challenge.

I had a really hard time getting into this book. I just couldn’t relate to the characters enough to get engrossed in their story. I can’t pinpoint any particular thing that really turned me off. It just wasn’t a story that grabbed my attention.

I would give it a 3 out of 5
