In this never-before-published historical romance, New York Times bestselling author Kerrelyn Sparks returns to the 18th century, where the fight for freedom is as dangerous as the fight for love.
Between searching for the missing Munro sisters and South Carolina being all but lost to the British, Captain Matthais Thomas has more important things to worry about than finding a bride. But his mother has other ideas. When Matthais finds a beautiful woman in his bed who claims to be his betrothed, he is suspicious of her identity…and determined to discover the truth.
Caroline Munro had few options. The British burned down her home, and now, traveling with her very pregnant sister, Caroline is pretending to be someone she’s not so they can have a safe place to rest. But she didn’t count on a matchmaking matron or her rogue of a son…and certainly never dreamed she would fall in love with a spy.

Less Than A Gentleman is a new HR by the wonderful Kerrelyn Sparks. Like all of her books, it is wrought with wonderful dialog, clever characters and smexy romance.
The story is about Captain Matthais Thomas who's battling the redcoats and his family. His mom is forever trying to set him up but Matt is determined not to ever marry. He has his reason, one being, he's at war but his mother is not deterred. She wants grandchildren dang it!
It's also about Caroline Munro. She is doing everything she can to keep her family alive while the redcoats rape and pillage her town. She's bound and determined to keep her niece, nephew and pregnant sister safe while they make their way to where their father's army is stationed and hopefully they'll make it safely. While on their journey, they are robbed and everything they own is stolen. With only their hope and drive moving them forward, they stumble acrossed a house with an elderly lady and servants. The lady of the house immediately assumes that Caroline is the soon-to-be bride she has prearranged to marry her son and Caroline, who's completely desperate at this point, goes along with the lie, even if it means she marries a man she has never met.

So let me preface this review with this fact, I.AM.NOT.A.HISTORICAL.ROMANCE.LOVER. but I do love Kerrelyn Sparks and Avon, so I gave it a shot and I was pleasantly surprised. Aside from the outlandish set up, I mean, it was really a bit far fetched but I won't spoil it, so I digress. Aside from the set up to get the two characters together, I did really enjoy this story. I even found myself reading parts of it to my hubby. The story moves quickly. The baddies are bad, the hero is roguish and the damsels are smart and assertive. I also absolutely adored the kids! I really enjoyed the story and the peek into the 1780's America. All in all, if you like HR, give this cute, fun, flirty, roguish book a try. 4 out of 5 books.
