Review : Vertigo by Gwenan Haines (CR)

Book Blurb

When attorney Blake Cartwright abandons a successful career to turn a dilapidated lighthouse into an inn, everybody thinks she's gone a little bit crazy. After witnessing a body fall from the tower, Blake wonders if they might be right. According to local legend, the spirit of a former keeper's wife lures women to their deaths in the icy water below. Has Blake witnessed a suicide, seen a ghost--or is she just seeing things?

Declan Hunter, the mysterious man she hires to help with renovations, doesn't help matters. The man with the Navy SEAL physique claims to be nothing more than a local handyman, but Blake's instincts warn her not to trust him. As the mystery deepens, she finds herself drawn into a dangerous labyrinth of secrets, lies, and murder. But the most serious danger of all may be falling for a man determined to leave her.

Toot's Review

So I just finished Vertigo by Gwenan Haines and loved this CR! I totally don't want to spoil this book for you, so I'm going to give you a bit of a teaser and simply say, buy it.

Vertigo is a action packed suspenseful romance about lighthouses, ghosts, history, drugs and the DEA. Did I mention, I really enjoyed this CR? From the start, it grabs you and doesn't let go. Two stories are intertwined in this book. First, the books starts off in 1922 with some scary events of the previous lighthouse keeper and his family (think Steven King's The Shining), then the story jumps to the present when, said lighthouse, is sold to former attorney Blake Cartwright. She's decided to move to this small town, buy the lighthouse and turn it into an Inn. What she doesn't bank on, is the ghosts. Well not all the ghosts but one specific living one in particular whom she catches on her property the very first night, Declan Hunter. He's not actually a ghost but he is found skulking around inside the lighthouse property. When Blake confronts him, he claims he likes old places and wanted to check the lighthouse out but something about his answer doesn't sit right with Blake. After their initial unconventional introduction, Declan offers to help Blake around the property. Warily she decides to take him up on his offer, mainly she needs the help but also to take the opportunity to dig deeper into finding out the truth about this sexy stranger. As the book goes on, so does the romance and intrigue. We find out that Declan is waaaayyyy more then he lets on and danger lurks just around the corner or in the bushes, for the former attorney. Whom can she trust and is she destined to become one of the permanent residents of the lighthouse? You're just going to have to read it to find out!
