ARC Review : The Wrong Girl by C.J. Archer (YA)

Book Blurb

It's customary for Gothic romance novels to include a mysterious girl locked in the attic. Hannah Smith just wishes she wasn't that girl. As a narcoleptic and the companion to an earl's daughter with a strange affliction of her own, Hannah knows she's lucky to have a roof over her head and food in her belly when so many orphans starve on the streets. Yet freedom is something Hannah longs for. She did not, however, want her freedom to arrive in the form of kidnapping.

Taken by handsome Jack Langley to a place known as Freak House, she finds herself under the same roof as a mad scientist, his niece, a mute servant and Jack, a fire starter with a mysterious past. They assure Hannah she is not a prisoner and that they want to help her. The problem is, they think she's the earl's daughter. What will they do when they discover they took the wrong girl?

Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

This is the first book in the Freak House series by C.J. Archer. The main character is a Miss Hannah Smith and she is the companion to Violet Wade, daughter to Lord Wade. Hannah and Violet live in the attic of Windamere Manor as a result of Violet’s affliction. She is a fire starter. Hannah, herself, suffers from narcolepsy. They are kept away from the rest of the house hold and society as a whole. They are the best of friends and rely on each other to get through their lonely days.

One day as the two young women are on their daily walk, Hannah is kidnapped and brought to the house known as Freak House. She is mistaken as Violet and thought to be a fire starter. The Langleys snatch her and bring her to their house to save her and teach her how to control her gift. She is very suspicious of their motives and plays along with their assumption that she is Violet. She would protect Violet until she knew what these people wanted.

Jack Langley is also a fire starter and begins trying to teach her how to control her fire. He becomes frustrated when she could not call it forward, not knowing she couldn’t do it. Hannah continues to learn about her new friends and knows they have secrets. She is determined to learn those secrets because she believes they have information about her. She is desperate to know more about herself. Her search for these secrets sends her to London and in the hands of another mad scientist that threatens her new friends’ lives.

This book is a historical adventure in nature. It was very intriguing with its sci-fi storyline. The characters were complex and Hannah was an outspoken and determined woman. Those are my favorite female heroines. I liked this book. It is different from what I normally read but it was a great story and held my interest. The story’s secrets are wound throughout and the reader is continually trying to guess at the motives and pasts of the characters.

I give this a 4 out of 5 rating
