Seventeen-year-old Raine Cooper has enough on her plate dealing with her father’s disappearance, her mother’s erratic behavior and the possibility of her boyfriend relocating. The last thing she needs is Torin St. James—a mysterious new neighbor with a wicked smile and uncanny way of reading her.
Raine is drawn to Torin’s dark sexiness against her better judgment, until he saves her life with weird marks and she realizes he is different. But by healing her, Torin changes something inside Raine. Now she can’t stop thinking about him. Half the time, she’s not sure whether to fall into his arms or run.
Scared, she sets out to find out what Torin is. But the closer she gets to the truth the more she uncovers something sinister about Torin. What Torin is goes back to an ancient mythology and Raine is somehow part of it. Not only is she and her friends in danger, she must choose a side, but the wrong choice will cost Raine her life.

Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

This YA book was a great read.  The first in a series about a young woman named Raine, which is short for Lorraine.  Raine is a normal 16 year old girl, goes to school, swims on the school swim team and lives with her parents.  However, Raine has lately lost her father in an airplane crash.  He is declared missing but not dead yet.  Her mother believes he is alive, but Raine is losing hope.  She has two best friends, Cora and Eirick, who are both swimmers with her.  She has loved Eirick forever.  He was her neighbor until recently and they grew up together as the best of friends.  She wants more and is patiently waiting for him to make the move.

Just as things are starting to come together between them, Raine gets a new neighbor in Eirick’s old house.  He is her age, but lives alone.  He introduces himself as Torin and irritates her to no end with his cocky arrogance.  He appears everywhere Raine turns.  Then more new students show up that are somehow tied with Torin.  Raine begins seeing them everywhere and these strange symbols on her car, the school, and the new students.  The crazy thing is none of her other friends can see them.  She knows there is something not normal about these new students including Torin.  She is involved somehow and her plans for her perfect relationship with Eirick are threatened by the feelings she has for Torin.  She needs to find out what is going on before more people get hurt or die and why the runes show up.

This story was action packed and kept me questioning along with the main character about what was really going on.  I couldn’t put it down.  I also am impatiently waiting for the second one to see how the story continues to carry on.  The reader gets completely behind Raine as she struggles with her feelings and the situations thrown her way.  The ending is surprising as Raine is fully thrown into another world of Norse gods and things unknown to humans.  I would give this a 4 out of 5 book.
