Review: The Summer of Chasing Mermaids by Sarah Ockler

Book Blurb

The youngest of six talented sisters, Elyse d’Abreau was destined for stardom—until a boating accident took everything from her. Now, the most beautiful singer in Tobago can’t sing. She can’t even speak.

Seeking quiet solitude, Elyse accepts a friend’s invitation to Atargatis Cove. Named for the mythical first mermaid, the Oregon seaside town is everything Elyse’s home in the Caribbean isn’t: An ocean too cold for swimming, parties too tame for singing, and people too polite to pry—except for one.

Christian Kane is a notorious playboy—insolent, arrogant, and completely charming. He’s also the only person in Atargatis Cove who doesn’t treat Elyse like a glass statue. He challenges her to express herself, and he admires the way she treats his younger brother Sebastian, who believes Elyse is the legendary mermaid come to life.

When Christian needs a first mate for the Cove’s high-stakes Pirate Regatta, Elyse reluctantly stows her fear of the sea and climbs aboard. The ocean isn’t the only thing making waves, though—swept up in Christian’s seductive tide and entranced by the Cove’s charms, Elyse begins to wonder if a life of solitude isn’t what she needs. But changing course again means facing her past. It means finding her inner voice. And scariest of all, it means opening her heart to a boy who’s best known for breaking them . . .

Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

Elyse is visiting her aunt in Oregon. She left her home in Tobago after the accident that left her unable to talk and sing. She has lost herself and fears the sea. She has escaped a watery death twice and she knows she won’t be so lucky the next time. She is determined to keep her head down and help in her aunt’s shop and gallery.

Unfortunately the Mayor makes a wager on the annual regatta that puts her aunt’s house and business in jeopardy. Elyse decides she will swallow her fears of the sea and help Christian prepare his old boat for the race.

They grow closer as they work on the boat but Elyse still fights against letting go of the past and letting someone in. She also continues to hide from the mermaid queen in the ocean that stalks her. She still keeps herself away from her family refusing to talk to her twin sister Natalie. It takes the truth from Kirby and a confrontation with the mermaid queen for Elyse to overcome her past.

This was a unique story. The reader feels for Elyse. She almost dies losing her voice in the process. Her dream of singing is forever gone. She flees Tobago because she can’t watch her sister live their dream without her. I love how the author presented Elyse’s struggle to the reader. Her pain was so tangible.

Her friendship with Christian was fun to watch evolve. He finds her on his boat hiding out. He is the ultimate player and Kirby has warned Elyse away from him. Yet after their embarrassing beginning moment, I loved how they meshed and worked together.

The only part of the book I really wasn’t clear on was the mermaid part. Elyse would see her and show how scared she was. I was confused about whether she was a figment of Elyse’s imagination or somehow real. It definitely compounded her fear but I was not sure what was going on. However I truly liked the storyline and the characters. I give the book a 4 out of 5.
