Bruce was a lover of coffee, the Rolling Stones and Star Trek. He hated fish with a passion and loved Colorado—despite never actually having been there. He was Lynne Podrat's younger brother, and her book, 'Listen To Me: How My Down Syndrome Brother Saved My Life,' is as much a eulogy for him, as it is a memoir of her life.
“Listen to me,” is something that Bruce used to say to his sister so often, it almost seemed to punctuate his speech. It is one of the sayings that Lynne refers to in the book as a “Bruce-ism” and something that still makes her and her family laugh, despite losing their beloved brother and uncle to cancer several years ago.
Although she was 13 years older than him, Lynne adored her younger brother and became not only his biggest fan but his confidant as well over the course of their lives.
In the book, Lynne also says that “To know Bruce was to love him,” a fact that she so distinctly demonstrates over the course of this memoir. Everyone loved Bruce, from his sibling’s friends, to his teachers, to his nieces and nephews and later, great-nieces and great-nephews. Even the coffee shop baristas and people at his synagogue loved Bruce, and everyone that met him walked away feeling a sense of lightness and whimsy.
Lynne Podrat writes about her late brother in simple, but adoring tones and in a way that makes the reader feel like they knew Bruce too-- and feel the loss of him just as keenly. No one can ever replace Bruce in their lives, but reading this memoir, you get the sense that Lynne felt a certain exorcism of the soul while writing it.
Remembering Bruce seems like a happy thing for her, despite the pain of his passing and reading this book gives you that happy feeling, too. It is a well written memoir for a life well lived. I highly recommend it!
