Book Blurb & Info
A spiritualist, an insane asylum, a lost little girl . . .
When Clive, anxious to distract a depressed Henrietta, begs Sergeant Frank Davis for a case, he is assigned to investigating a seemingly boring affair: a spiritualist woman operating in an abandoned schoolhouse on the edge of town who is suspected of robbing people of their valuables. What begins as an open and shut case becomes more complicated, however, when Henrietta—much to Clive’s dismay—begins to believe the spiritualist’s strange ramblings.
Meanwhile, Elsie implores Clive and Henrietta to help her and the object of her budding love, Gunther, locate the whereabouts of one Liesel Klinkhammer, the German woman Gunther has traveled to America to find and the mother of the little girl, Anna, whom he has brought along with him. The search leads them to Dunning Asylum, where they discover some terrible truths about Liesel. When the child, Anna, is herself mistakenly admitted to the asylum after an epileptic fit, Clive and Henrietta return to Dunning to retrieve her. This time, however, Henrietta begins to suspect that something darker may be happening. When Clive doesn’t believe her, she decides to take matters into her own hands . . . with horrifying results.

Toot's Review by Betty Bee
Being a Chicago detective in the 1930's could be rough, but Clive Howard pulls it off with ease and style. Having met and married his wife, Henrietta over the course of the first five books in the series, this book begins with the aftermath of the couple suffering a devastating miscarriage that rocks their relationship to its core.
Struggling to understand what his wife is going through; Clive decides to take her mind off of her sadness by pulling her in on a case that he has recently been given. The case involves a local spiritualist who has been accused of stealing from her clients. Though she is initially afraid of the woman, Madame Pavlovsky, Henrietta is soon taken in by the woman's observations and Clive begins to worry that he should not have brought her into that world.
Meanwhile, the couple is also asked by a friend, Elise, if they will help her locate the mother of a child that her new love, Gunther has been caring for. This quest brings Clive and Henrietta to a mental asylum where grim discoveries are waiting and happy endings are few and far between.
The crux of this novel doesn't only revolve around the mystery but around the relationship between Henrietta and Clive and the passion and love that they have for one another. Their gentleness and tenderness and the way that they had to reconnect after the heartbreaking loss of their unborn child made me tear up several times.
I love a good love story in historical fiction and this is certainly a great one. I had a wonderful reading experience with this book and I would highly recommend it to anyone who loves historical novels and detective mysteries. I highly recommend it and give it 5 stars.

Unbeknownst to most, Cox hoards board games she doesn’t have time to play and is, not surprisingly, addicted to period dramas and big band music. Also, marmalade.
