Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

In this first soul guardians book, the reader is introduced to Kara, aspiring artist.  She is on her way to a presentation for an internship when she is hit by a bus.  She has been chosen to be a guardian angel and the reader is introduced to the afterlife.  I can’t figure out why different types of monkeys run the elevators.  That was bizarre.
The storyline was interesting.  She was classified as a rookie and is assigned a trainer, David.  He is so cocky that he continually lightens the mood.  Kara is only sixteen which you didn’t know until she dies.  Her age definitely appears with her attitude and disbelief in the beginning.  To be honest her character was pretty annoying in the beginning.  You can tell she is a tad self-centered.  I couldn’t wait until she adapted.  Once she did and accepted her new life, the story started to take off.  I liked her better.  She grew tougher and more confident.  The twists that the author throws in about her mother is a little shocking.  There isn’t much said about it, so you know more will be revealed later.

Then the mark wrecks havoc on Kara’s life.  Everyone thinks she is a traitor even David.  That was hard to read. She is basically abandoned, and she becomes determined to prove her innocence.  When she is sent in to help save a child as a rookie, you wonder if she is supposed to come back.  It’s an elaborate way to get rid of her.  It was pretty action packed as the demons converge on her every time she goes to earth.  I like the elemental avenue that pops up in the end.  I can’t wait to see how the author explores that.  The ending is a bit bittersweet for Kara and David.  It wasn’t what I expected but want to read the next book to see what happens next.  This one leaves you hanging a little.  I give it a 4 out of 5.
