Review: Serpentine by Laurell K. Hamilton

So about 50% of the way through the book and it’s the same old song - work before relationships, everyone has hurt feelings, poly life is problematic, woman suck (except Anita because they are all jealous cows), the cups have cracks that need to be cleaned in a special way (wait that’s from one of the other books in the series but she is still greatly over explaining everything like we’re toddlers who can’t figure crap out for ourselves), size isn’t everything (short girls and guys have value too!), there’s some supernatural and metaphysical stuff sprinkled in and then we wrap it up with a lame ass bow. Oh wait and everyone is beyond beautiful except Anita (at least In her eyes because after 20+ books, she keeps saying how they all need therapy but no one seems to ever get any) and somehow this reverse harem only has eyes for her and each other and no one is really monogamous but hey it’s ok because they all love each other except for the girls, she has a real issue with girl on girl but guy on guy and girl on 5 is ok.

At around 60% it becomes a different book. It's more like a classic Anita story but it's kind of a little too late for me at this point. There's more feelings, more sharing (literally) and the 4 Horsemen are back together to solve another mystery. I was intrigued by the premise of a different type of shifter but it quickly becomes overshadowed by more of the issues that sunk this series in the first place.

I think that if this series was a newbie today, it would be torn to shreds but people hold nostalgia in their hearts and keep hoping that with each new book, she’ll somehow return to her UF/PNR roots with the series and make it what it should have always been but sometimes when you go sooooo far off the path, the original route is nowhere to be seen, no matter how much we wish it wasn’t so. That’s how people become so lost that not even Search and Rescue can find them and sadly, I think that’s the case with Anita Blake. We love the characters and we love the nostalgia but its gone so far off the rails that you might as well send in the Cadaver Dogs.

Speaking of Cadaver Dogs; I finished the book because like you, I have a small flicker of hope that one of my original PNR loves will somehow show a blip on the life support machine. I’m hoping beyond hope for that one little bump in the static line but please, dear God please, put this series out of its misery. Even if the blip appears, it would be a totally legit assisted suicide for the sake of every reader out there to just help us out by pulling the plug.

As much as I love the characters and wish no Ill will, I can’t say that every page I read I’m hoping that a bomb detonates on the Circus Of The Damned and that only Nathaniel and Micah survive (maybe Nicky too) and we can just mourn and move the f**k on finally.

That is all Ted~
