Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

Ariel’s best friend Jenna disappeared.  She left Ariel’s house never to return. Ariel’s life has forever changed.  Nothing is really important anymore.  She has lost touch with any other friends she had.  She is considered the freak at school and the object of Lainey’s bullying.  Ariel knows that the popular and rich students in Lainey’s circle get preferential treatment from Principal McPherson because of the Thornhill Society.
When Henry enters the picture, Ariel is drawn to him and he seems drawn to her.  He helps her try to find out what is happening.  Her dreams seem so real and she is seeing the missing girls.  At first she doesn’t believe it but she soon realizes that she is seeing ghosts.  She keeps it to herself knowing no one will believe her.
Unfortunately more is going on here than she knows.  She and Henry get caught in the middle. She realizes she is losing everything she cared about.
This story was very dark.  It started out with how Jenna left and the mystery of her disappearance affecting Ariel’s life.  She is withdrawn, living in a fog.  Her family keeps things from here.  Their relationship is odd.  She calls them by their first names instead of mom and dad.  They tend to leave her in the dark.
Ariel doesn’t even try in the beginning.  It was difficult to read.  I wanted her to be braver and more proactive with her actions.  Unfortunately she had no real clue what was happening.  I hated that her parents knew more about the story but refused to share.  Right now it doesn’t make a lot of sense.  The secrets are huge with no real direction.  This story really focuses on Ariel’s ability with seeing ghosts as she stumbles through.

Her relationship with Henry was hard to read.  They were sweet together then he pushes her away.  She had such yo-yo emotions.  He means well at first and explains a little bit.  However the ending was surprising.  I wasn’t expecting the change in the story or has it affected the characters.  It was a bit heart breaking to read.  I give it a 4 out of 5.
