Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala
In this
first book in the Midnight Fire Series, Kira moved to Charleston with her mom,
dad and little sister, but she has been attending private school in New York
for the last four years. She didn’t meet
anyone when home for the summer. So her
first day at the local high school is a bit nerve wracking. Fortunately fellow student, Luke Bowrey,
takes pity on her and becomes her guide in the maze of hallways. He also saves her at lunch, introducing her
to the other new students that came before her.
They all become fast friends.
Kira’s new friends give her the lay of the land, pointing out certain
groups at school including the misfits.
This group keeps to themselves, yet one catches Kira’s interest,
Tristan. He appears the tortured bad boy
and different from the other three in the group.
Tristan’s
interest is also peaked when it comes to Kira but he knows they can’t be
together. He has secrets that he is
hiding. They all include Luke. Kira can feel it but doesn’t know what. She gets a weird feeling in class when she
and Tristan get into an argument. Then
when she and Tristan are confronted by the rest of his group later, the world
changes for Kira. She learns the secrets
that everyone has been keeping, even those about her. She is shocked and her world will never be
the same.
I liked this
story. It starts out mysterious with the
misfit group and their secrets. The
author hints at things as the story unfolds.
Kira knows something is up just as the reader is. You enter this journey with Kira as both
character and reader try to figure out what is going on.
When the
secrets come out, it wasn’t what I expected.
It is a twist on the vampire/vampire hunter storyline. The author added some different ideas to a
classic battle. Kira is the innocent heroine
and Diana is an excellent villain. The
author went all out with the mean girl attitude. She is a good character to hate. The battle of good versus evil is clearly
drawn between the two groups. Tristan is
the wild card. You aren’t sure which
direction he is going to go. I like that
he is trying to protect Kira but the author clearly shows how hard his fight
will be.
Kira and her
friends are awesome characters. Everyone
needs friends like them. Tristan is the
tortured character everyone wants to save.
Then Diana, John and Jerome are the ones to hate. It was a great read and I can’t wait to read
the next book. I give this story a 4 out
of 5.
