Deep Series - Book One
Erotic Romance
The more lines they cross, the deeper they get…Top cadet Lana Marsden lives by the rules. The most important rule of all: no messing around with an officer. She learned that one the hard way.
Now her only desire is to survive the grueling DEEP Training program and leave that scandalous past behind.
When she reports to Station Six amid wild rumors of erotic hazing rituals and sadomasochistic games, she’s not prepared for any of the rumors to be true—or for her insatiable attraction to Sergeant “Catch” Durant, her tattooed rebel of a trainer.
One touch from Catch, and Lana knows she’s in trouble. One night of white-hot ecstasy, and the rules melt away.
Catch knows sweet, sexy Lana is forbidden. She’s his trainee, and her overprotective brother is his best friend. But one taste and Catch knows the last woman he’s supposed to touch will be the one to bring him to his knees. Which is exactly where he wants to be…
A cadet with a secret.
An officer with a secret kink.
A whole lot of rules to be broken.
DEEP is the first full-length novel in the DEEP Series. Contains hot men (and women) in uniform, a violated Code of Conduct, and ice cream. Intended for adult readers, 18+.
Book Excerpt
A DEEP Excerpt
From DEEP by Jaine Diamond
The following excerpt features cadet Lana Marsden in a state of mind-melting, body-quaking ecstasy, due in part to something she recently ingested, but even more so to the proximity of her scorching hot commanding officer, Sergeant "Catch" Durant...
“I want you to touch me.”
Lana's blood rushes through her body. Her thoughts rush. She swallows, trying to hold everything back. Trying to hold herself together, not come shuddering apart. Trying not to melt down right in front of him.
He stares at her, the heat pouring off his body, warming her. “Ask me.”
It takes her a moment to process the request. Then she whispers, “Please, touch me.”
Catch’s warm hands skim up her sides, fingertips drifting over the patches of skin bared by the dress. She moans, hearing her voice like it’s not her own.
“Like this?”
Her eyes keep rolling closed. “God.” She puts her hands on his arms to steady herself. Feels the vibration where he touches her, until she’s melting into his hands, until she wavers on her feet.
“May I… may I sit down?”
“No, Lana. You’re going to stand right here, and I’m going to watch you.”
His gaze melts down her face, her throat. His hand traps her left breast like he’s holding her heart; she feels it pumping in his grip. His other hand delves beneath the hem of the dress. He strokes her through her panties, lifting her, weightless, on a wave of pleasure.
She shudders and closes her eyes, and pushes herself into him. Her fingers dig into his arms. It’s all too much. It’s not enough. Catch is stroking her through her panties. She’s in his hands and she’s melting, completely melting, and she’s still kind of floating, she doesn’t know where she is. Can’t locate herself in any of this.
She opens her eyes and all at once she becomes hyperaware that they’re just a speck floating out in the universe and nothing matters, nothing but this, this moment here with him, this tight little space pressed together, his fingers stroking her through a thin bit of cotton, and she’s here, she’s right here pressed against him, his touch sending waves of pleasure through her, her ecstasy climbing toward some distant peak. Catch.
This perfect thing.
This forbidden thing...
Author Interview
Hi Jaine,
Thank you so much for sitting down with Toot's for an
interview. If you don't mind, I have some questions for you about your new
book, Deep and your process for our budding authors as well as fans.
So first off, Deep Questions.......
In your own
words, what is Deep about?
DEEP is about two people breaking all the rules--their own
personal rules, as well as those imposed upon them by the world they live
in--to be together. In order to do that, they have to risk pretty much
everything. It forces them to be completely honest with themselves and with one
another about who they are and what they want, and that’s harder to do than it
might seem.
How did you come up with the title of the book and can you
tell us its significance?
The title is DEEP, all caps, which is the name of the
training program that the heroine, Lana, goes through in the book. It stands
for Deep Space Extra-Vehicular and Emergency Preparedness. Lana’s dream is to
go into the deep (deep space), and in order to do that she has to pass this
intense training program. It’s kind of like Navy SEALS training - in space. And
of course deep has other connotations; the tagline for the book is: The more lines they cross, the deeper they
get… In order for Lana and her trainer--our hero, Catch--to get together,
they have to cross a lot of lines - and break a lot of rules.
Is Deep a standalone book or will it be part of a series?
DEEP is the first book in the DEEP Series; the story
continues in book two, which I am currently writing for 2016 release.
What genre would you say Deep is and what sets your book
apart for fans of the genre?
DEEP is erotic romance. The subgenres are BDSM (lite), and
military / men in uniform. There is also a sci-fi/futuristic setting, but the
book reads like a contemporary story. I think the military/space combo is
unusual in that it reads quite realistic. I feel like it’s sort of a sexed-up
Battlestar Galactica - without the aliens and space battles. In terms of BDSM,
this isn’t your standard male Dom / female sub story. There’s a lot more going
on beneath the surface for both characters, which we learn as the story
develops.
What are some of the elements of the world you created?
The story takes place on Station Six, a remote space
station, quite large and self-sustained, with hundreds of people living and
working there, all military personnel. The military body that runs the space
stations and basically patrols space is called the International Space Corps. I
liked the idea of a military romance that was set in a unique setting, where
the rules are pretty much what we’d expect in the real world, but with some
twists.
If you had to pick one thing, what is your favorite thing
about the world you’ve created?
Hmm. The hot men in uniform. I guess I developed a pilot fetish
watching all those episodes of Battlestar Galactica.
What was your favorite scene to write for either your hero
or heroine in Deep?
Besides the sex scenes, which are always fun to write…
For the hero, Catch, I’ve always loved his scenes at fight
night. The fights take place in a back room in the hangar, and let the officers
blow off steam. Some scenes get edited multiple times and finessed and obsessed
over, but some scenes, like the fight scenes, remained pretty much how I wrote
them because they just worked from day one. The fight scenes are a little taste
of Catch’s life when Lana’s not around and a hint of what makes him tick, and I
think they’re damn sexy.
For the heroine, Lana, the scene where she misses her best
friend back on Earth, and later the scene where she gets to talk to her. These
scenes were also pretty much bang on as soon as I wrote them. Lana’s a strong
young woman, and she’s also pretty isolated, up against a lot of tough stuff -
competing with men in a military training environment. These scenes are a
chance to see Lana vulnerable, and to feel her love for a friend that knows her
inside and out. Lana operates like a lone wolf much of the time, but deep down
she needs people.
What was the hardest scene to write?
For me, the opening scene is usually the hardest. I obsess
over it way too much. I usually edit the opening scene about a million times.
Or so it seems. There’s so much to set up at the beginning, without boring or
losing the reader, or getting lost in too much detail, trying to hook the
reader and keep the story moving forward, giving them enough to get drawn in
and understand the story stakes, the character and setting, while not slowing
down the action. I feel like I’ve pulled it off here. When you read chapter
one, I think you know what type of book you’re reading.
What's your favorite line or quote from Deep?
She doesn’t understand
it yet; he knows she doesn’t. That she’s not the one being bound.
That’s a tough question to answer. There are so many
favorite lines, for different reasons. But I think this is one of the strongest
lines, and moments, in the book, when we start to understand what this all
means to Catch.
Writing.......
Do you recall how your interest in writing originated and
what made you decide to pursue it as a career?
When I was ten years old my teacher gave me a poetry writing
assignment. That was the first time I realized writing wasn’t just in books,
that it was something I could do. I was hooked! I have dabbled in other careers
over the years, but writing has always been my passion. It’s the one thing I
absolutely have to do. I’d tried other things and not found the same joy I find
in writing. So a couple of years ago I decided it was time to get serious about
the one thing I truly love. Writing, for me, is like a love affair. Not writing
for a living would be like being in love with someone from affair and never saying
“I love you,” and taking a chance on them. Ridiculous! And definitely not the
way I roll.
What inspires you to put the pen to paper or fingers to the
keyboard?
The desire to write down all these crazy, sexy stories in my
head! And to share them with readers.
What are some of the elements in/of your writing process?
When I have an idea for a new story, I let it take root in
my head a while. Then I’ll start jotting down ideas as they come, and see if
there’s really something there that could make a book. When I know I want to
write the book (I have a few in progress now), I create a ‘bible’ for the book
or series, in which I map everything out, from genre, format, POV, tense and
the setting, to characters, backstory, timeline and the blurb. Then I write out
the main story; I usually base it on a fairly detailed three-act story
structure, identifying the main plot points and turning points and the build of
the story, and go from there. Then when I actually write the book, I write the
scenes as they come to me, not in sequential order. I write the ones that are
vivid in my mind and that I most want to write, and fill in the rest as I go.
Are you a Plotter or a Pantser?
A bit of both! I always try to write the plot out in at
least point form, but sometimes the story takes over. The characters start to
talk to me and I have to get it out on paper. The story develops and transforms
as it comes out, and that’s a good thing, too. For me, some of the best writing
and character development happen organically in the process of writing the
scenes.
Have you released anything under a different pen name, and
if so, is there any difference between them?
Not yet, but I do have a big YA series, four novels plus
novellas, in the works, about halfway completed, which will be released
separately, under a different pen name. Because it’s YA and what I’m doing now
is erotic, the heat level is quite different, though they are all love stories
at heart.
What's next for you?
Currently I’m working on the next book in the DEEP series.
I’m also writing the first book in a new contemporary erotic romance series
about the members of a sexy rock band and the women and men who love them. This
is a chance to let my inner fan girl have her moment. I can’t wait to release
this series.
Is there anything you’d like to add or say to your fans?
Thank you for taking a chance on a new erotic romance
author! I have many more sexy stories in store for you.
Personal questions......
Now I know this is like asking
you to choose between your own children, but out of all your amazing
characters, who is your favorite and why?
Catch. He’s sexy as hell,
strong, intelligent, mysterious, and has a huge weakness for Lana and a
vulnerability that I adore but don’t often see in alpha male types in romance.
Are there any of your stories
or characters that hold a special place in your heart?
DEEP definitely does, because
it’s the first book I’ve chosen to finish and to publish. It was a wild idea
that I committed to and just told the story I wanted to tell.
If the book had to have a theme
song, what would it be?
Oh my. There’s a sexy crazy
song by Deadmau5, called One Trick Pony, that is the kind of thing you might
hear if you were the sort of person to cruise through a really, really good
electronica party in the wee hours and a whole lot of sexy people were grinding
up on each other and probably also really high, lol. Because DEEP takes place
in the future I don’t imagine anyone actually listening to Deadmau5 or today’s
music on Station Six, but this is one of the songs that fueled the steamy dance
party scene where Lana lets loose… and Catch takes notice.
Lastly, What 5 things do fans not know about you and 5
they don't know about the book?
About me:
1. I’m really kind of a nerd deep down. I guess that
might be evident by now.
2. The first erotic book I ever read, years ago, was the
memoir Nine and a Half Weeks. I’d now consider the relationship in that book to
be abusive, but it blew my mind. I’d never read anything like it before, and it
stuck in my bones.
3. I secretly love the movie G.I. Jane. (I blame Viggo
Mortensen.) Shh, don’t tell anyone.
4. I listened to a lot of Santogold (from her album Santogold)
while writing DEEP, but usually I don’t listen to music while I write.
5. If you ever see me with a spaced-out, dreamy look on
my face, I’m probably writing a sex scene in my head.
About DEEP:
1. The original concept for
DEEP came out of me pondering the idea: “Exit to Eden - in space.” If you
haven’t read Exit to Eden, it’s a book by Anne Rice about an exclusive BDSM
club located on an island. For some reason I was intrigued by the idea of a similar
concept in space… and the idea for DEEP grew out of that.
2. A place like Station Six
probably could never exist in the physical layout in which I described it, as
it kinda defies the laws of physics or some such thing. However, if you didn’t
notice, pretend I didn’t say anything.
3. The Slave Week in DEEP
Training, and some of the other training, was inspired by BUDS training for the
Navy SEALS, combined with astronaut training.
4. I had so much rabid interest
from my beta readers about Catch’s ex, Docker, and about Catch’s relationship
with her, that I am considering writing a novella that delves deeper into that
relationship, and why it was so f-d up.
5. You will see more of Hilt in
the future. Hopefully those green eyes made an impression on you. ;)
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for taking time to answer
some questions. Congratulations on the new book and I can't wait for everyone
to read it! – Toot’s
Thank YOU! What an amazing and thoughtful interview -
