I’ve taken this advice to heart, creating characters who live in small towns and plots that unfold in the great outdoors.I grew up in Gasquet, a tiny town in Northern California, where as kids we swam in the river, ran wild in the woods, and rode our bikes every-where we wanted to go. Now I live in Tahoe City with my husband, two daughters, and dog, Ginger. When I’m not busy writing or being a full time mom, I enjoy taking Ginger for hikes in the woods around our home.Whether I’m writing romantic suspense, contemporary, or historical romance, I try to bring the beauty of nature to my stories.I graduated from U.C. In your own words, what is Death and Desire about?
Investigative television reporter, Taylor Ford has a conundrum with her belief in the laboratory-science theory drilled into us in high school:
Only what is able to be duplicated in a lab is truth. Only what science can measure and study exists.
She is forced to redefine her definition of reality and see beyond her self-imposed boundary of what she believes can exist into a dark and foreign land populated by frightening creatures- or she and her Navajo cop aren't going to make it.
Is Death and Desire a standalone book or will it be part of a series?
Death and Desire is the first book of five in The Nation series. Beneath the Dark Moon is the second and Trance Dancers is the third.
What genre would you say Death and Desire is and what sets your book apart for fans of the genre?
Death and Desire is a contemporary romantic suspense unfolding in the land of never summer mountains and high walled desert canyons of the Navajo Nation in Arizona. While the book and the characters are fiction, the Navajo Way is accurately portrayed.
What are some of the elements of the world you created?
If you have been fortunate enough to visit Arizona, the land is unforgettable. The desert, the slot and finger canyons, the dry air and red dust clinging in the breeze all stay with you when you are back home cleaning the lint out of your clothes dryer. Within the dramatic backdrop of the land, Anglo culture and Navajo mysticism and rituals collide.
If you had to pick one thing, what is your favorite thing about the world you’ve created?
The Navajo people.
What was your favorite scene to write for either your hero or heroine in Death and Desire?
There are a couple of scenes where Taylor and Captain Trace Yazzie negotiate their relationship and the confines of their work. She's a nosy reporter and he's a Navajo cop. They find and use information differently and can't always share with each other which leads to conflict and confusion between them.
What was the hardest scene to write?
Several scenes in the final chapter. There is a lot of action and cross between the characters.
What's your favorite line or quote from Death and Desire?
When her gay field producer attempts to discuss her love life and says:
“Hey! You look surprised. I can prove it to you. Five minutes after a woman gets in bed, if nothing good is happening, she’s thinking about what’s downstairs in the frig. Right? Be honest.”
Writing.......
Do you recall how your interest in writing originated and what made you decide to pursue it as a career?
I wrote really bad short stories as a child. All set in Arizona and Utah where my family vacationed.
What inspires you to put the pen to paper or fingers to the keyboard?
I am inspired by the daily news rotation: immigration, environmental disasters, gang violence, drugs, and the failure of public schools to educate. All the unsolved issues we are wrangling with.
What are some of the elements in/of your writing process?
The primary element is research. I will not willingly misled my readers. Rituals, beliefs, cultures, and challenges are all presented as realistically as possible.
Are you a Plotter or a Panster?
I come from a broadcast journalism background and I am a Plotter! I have legal pads, post-a notes, and chits of paper littering my desk as well as a pad of paper and pen by my bed in case I have an idea in the wee hours. I plot out the intersection of the characters and the action to the final scene.
Have you released anything under a different pen name, and if so, is there any difference between them?
I wrote some very dry academic papers for publication and may they rest in their obscure journals.
What's next for you?
I am working on Trance Dancers, the third book in the Nation series.
Is there anything you’d like to add or say to your fans?
I decided to write fiction when I rode the light rail in Denver into work every morning. There seemed to be an unwritten rule book for riding the train. Don't make eye contact. Don't speak to anyone. And for heaven's sake don't bring coffee on the train!
The women pulled something out of their briefcase or bag to read, and I remember thinking, This is probably the only time we are not answering to someone, our kids, our boss, our spouse. We get a train ride to and from work to luxuriate in doing whatever we want. I think about my fellow riders when I write. I want to take you to another place and entertain you before the train stops and you go back to work!

Now I know this is like asking you to choose between your own children, but out of all your amazing characters, who is your favorite and why?
Taylor. She is assertive, hard headed, and borders on being reckless, but she has the capacity to grow and the discernment to make good changes.
Are there any of your stories or characters that hold a special place in your heart?
Sawyer, Taylor, and Jessica. All strong women, confident and independent. I love them.
If the book had to have a theme song, what would it be?
One of the beautiful Navajo songs from the Blessing Way ceremony.

Leo Maloney was born in Massachusetts, where he spent his childhood and graduated from high school and attended Northeastern University. In the mid 1960’s, while in the army, he was recruited to become a deep cover black ops contractor for a clandestine government agency.
While he was serving his country in the secretive world of Black Ops over 30 years, he operated several “cover” businesses including a classic car brokerage, promotions and limousine companies, and a detective agency. He served as a municipal police officer in Revere, Massachusetts and is still a licensed private investigator in the state of Massachusetts.
After leaving his career in black ops, Leo continued several of his cover businesses, and also had the opportunity to try his hand at acting in independent films and TV commercials. Leo has 5 movies to his credit both as an actor and behind the camera as a producer, technical advisor, and assistant director.
In his most recent project, Leo began writing, reliving many of his Black Ops experiences and evolving them into his books. In 2011 he signed a contract with Kensington Publishing Corp for the Dan Morgan thriller series. The first book, Termination Orders, was released in September 2012. The second book, Silent Assassin, was released in August of 2013. The third book, Black Skies, was released on 26 August 2014. The fourth book a novella, Twelve Hours, will be released in March of 2015. It’s now official, Leo has signed a movie deal with Amber Entertainment in LA / London to bring the “Dan Morgan” thriller series to the “BIG SCREEN”. It is slated to begin filming in 2015.
Leo currently resides in a suburb north of Boston with his wife and their German Shepherd, Neika.
