Review : Once Perfect (Shattered Past #1) by Cecy Robson

Book Blurb

His life was never easy. Hers wasn’t supposed to be this hard. They come from different worlds, but fate lures them together in a way neither expected in Cecy Robson’s raw, steamy New Adult debut—perfect for fans of Monica Murphy and J. Lynn.

Evelyn Preston’s future once looked perfect—until her wealthy father was caught in an embezzlement scandal and took his own life. Alone and struggling to pay her college tuition and bills, Evelyn finds a job as a waitress at the ultra-hip nightclub Excess, where she used to have more in common with the privileged private-school clientele than her fellow staff members. But something attracts her to the sexy six-foot-four bouncer and underground MMA fighter Mateo Tres Santos. Although they’ve led different lives, their troubled pasts bonds them in both survival and love.

Mateo is ex-army who wound up in prison for assaulting the man who harmed his sister. Now he’s feeling the same protective impulse for this petite blond waitress. When Evelyn experiences a panic attack at the club, Mateo comes to her rescue. And when Mateo is wounded shielding her from a brawl, Evelyn returns the favor and comes to his aid.

As their attraction intensifies, Mateo is determined to find out what nightmares are lurking in Evelyn’s past—even if that means tackling his own to save her.

Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

As a waitress at Club Excess near Philly at night, Evelyn is also a nursing student by day. No one but her roommate Lourdes knows her past. She is making a new life for herself after her father lost the family fortune then committed suicide. She was left with nothing. Her former house maid took her in and helped find a path to her future. Working at Club Excess helps pay for school and she needs to continue moving forward.

Mateo is a bouncer at Club Excess and a former ex-con. He is intimidating and tough. Evelyn is drawn to him but scared. She looks at him when he isn’t paying attention. When she has a major panic attack, he comes to her rescue. She decides, maybe, he isn’t so scary.

It turns out they both have family issues but they work well together. As they get closer, Evelyn has more and more nightmares. She doesn’t know where they are coming from. She feels like she is going crazy. She also fears that it will affect her physical relationship with Mateo.

Not only are her fears playing a part, so does Mateo’s fighting and his family. The biggest hurdle in Evelyn’s life comes when she learns where her nightmares come from. Her life is changed forever.

This book was an intense ride. It contained some very dark subjects, suicide, rape and physical abuse. It also presented a couple that was sweet together. I completely loved Mateo as a character. Every woman deserves a man like him. He was hot and completely sigh worthy.

It was difficult to read the altercation between Mateo and his father. It makes you sad to realize that some family beliefs believe you have to stand there and take it. The author created the scene for the reader where you felt you were there watching and unable to help.

I also liked how Evelyn blossomed as a nurse and a woman when she was with Mateo. She is dealing with her shock and memories the right way and Mateo learns he is more than an ex-con and bouncer. Happy endings for damaged people are what I truly like. I give it a 4 out 5.
