Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

This is the fourth book in the Arash series. The story picks up with Livia and Eamon having survived the burning of the monastery by walking through the door into the future. She has lost a year of her life and is a bit confused when Eamon explains she has been there the whole time so her friends have not missed her.

In the meantime Livia has been missing and her family has been unable to contact her mentally. Cassius is beside himself. He is afraid she is dead and he is the cause.

All this is unknown to Livia, but she is starting to notice some odd occurrences. Something isn’t right and Eamon seems to redirect her when she asks questions. She decides she needs to go back in the past to figure out what is wrong. Eamon reveals that it isn’t possible. However Eamon has been appearing in the real world finding out information and plotting his next move.

Livia finally connects the dots and figures out how to leave. After an unwanted stop, she gets back to her world. She steps into quite a mess. Her friends are finding information about her mark known as the mark of a Jhanmar. They are unsure what this means. An old story makes it sound that Livia could be the end of the Arash. Of course Philomena and Eamon are perpetuating the idea causing fear and doubt.

Livia almost loses everything. Surprises shock the families as they turn on each other. Chasing their shadows to survive becomes the top priority of some.

I like the characters and the storyline. It is such a unique story that it grabbed my attention immediately. However the characters tend to be extremely dramatic. In this book it was more visible than the past few. Also Livia was back to her weakened self. I really didn’t like her cowardice after all she has been through. She allowed Eamon to keep her in a world he made because she didn’t want to deal with it or trust her gut. I was disappointed in her for half of the story. She did redeem herself in the second half.

The concept of going into different worlds was intriguing, however was a bit confusing as I was reading the story. I had to wade through the bits of information and looking back in the story to figure out what was going on. The writing was also a bit choppy in places which added to some of the confusion. This book was definitely a journey. I give this book a 3 out of 5.
