Review : The Fine Art of Pretending (The Fine Art of Pretending #1) by Rachel Harris (YA)

Book Blurb

According to the guys at Fairfield Academy, there are two types of girls: the kind you hook up with, and the kind you're friends with. Seventeen-year-old Alyssa Reed is the second type. And she hates it. With just one year left to change her rank, she devises a plan to become the first type by homecoming, and she sets her sights on the perfect date—Justin Carter, Fairfield Academy’s biggest hottie and most notorious player.

With 57 days until the dance, Aly launches Operation Sex Appeal and sheds her tomboy image. The only thing left is for Justin actually to notice her. Enter best friend Brandon Taylor, the school’s second biggest hottie, and now Aly’s pretend boyfriend. With his help, elevating from “funny friend” to “tempting vixen” is only a matter of time.

But when everything goes according to plan, the inevitable “break up” leaves their friendship in shambles, and Aly and Brandon with feelings they can’t explain. And the fake couple discovers pretending can sometimes cost you the one thing you never expected to want.

Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

Alyssa Reed is about to start her senior year and she wants to be thought of as more than just a friend. She is tired of going out with the girls. She wants a date for the Homecoming dance. To do that she needs to make the boys in the school see her differently. She enlists her best friends, Kara and Gabi, to help with a make over. Then she has an epiphany about including her best friend Brandon. They decide to fake a hook up between them. Aly is hoping it will gain the attention of the school’s number one hottie, Justin. She is determined to be seen as a “casual” and have Justin as her Homecoming date.

Brandon wants to show her that she is better than a casual and keep Justin away from her. Justin is a guaranteed heartbreak. So Brandon is on a mission. The problem is that feelings are starting to get in the way. Aly is surprised at how everything plays out and how things really are instead of how they seem.

This was a cute book for YA readers. There are great friendships that every girl should have. I loved how her friends stood by her no matter what happened. They were a fun group to read about. Her friendship with Brandon was also sweet. I’m very surprised that feelings didn’t develop between them earlier, no matter how Brandon felt about love, but I guess his fear kept him blind.

The author did kind of brush over that aspect. Brandon is over his fear all of a sudden after talking to his mom. That seemed pretty fast after dealing with it since his father’s death.

This book was predictable but still a fun read for the target audience. I give it a 4 out of 5.
