ARC Review : Story Thieves (Story Thieves, #1) by James Riley (Children)

Book Blurb

Life is boring when you live in the real world, instead of starring in your own book series. Owen knows that better than anyone, what with the real world’s homework and chores.

But everything changes the day Owen sees the impossible happen—his classmate Bethany climb out of a book in the library. It turns out Bethany’s half-fictional and has been searching every book she can find for her missing father, a fictional character.

Bethany can’t let anyone else learn her secret, so Owen makes her a deal: All she has to do is take him into a book in Owen’s favorite Kiel Gnomenfoot series, and he’ll never say a word. Besides, visiting the book might help Bethany find her father…

…Or it might just destroy the Kiel Gnomenfoot series, reveal Bethany’s secret to the entire world, and force Owen to live out Kiel Gnomenfoot’s final (very final) adventure.

Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

Owen is shocked when he witnesses his classmate, Bethany, literally crawl out of the book she was reading earlier that day. In fact he is shocked even further when she pulls him into books with her. At first he believes he dreamed the whole experience, but the next day at school she confirms what happened the night before.

Now Owen is on a mission to learn how to enter the books. He has his own plan of entering his favorite book to save one of the beloved characters set to die. Even after Bethany told him not to interfere with the story, he is determined as he dreams of being a book hero.

When he gets the chance, he follows through with his plan. Bethany is shocked and angry at Owen’s betrayal. She is also afraid of the consequences that will happen since Owen changed the story. That is one of the most important rules, never do anything to change the story.

Now everything is out of control and neither Owen nor Bethany know what to do to fix it. They have to rely on Nobody to help them.

This story was very unique. It is a kid’s dream to jump into their favorite story and become a part of it. Meeting favorite characters and having the adventure they are only allowed to read about.

Bethany is an excellent character that possesses this wonderful gift. She tries to be responsible when she uses it. Owen gives her hope of finding her father, but he ends up making things into a big mess with his own ideas.

It was a fun book for kids to read with a lot of action, mystery and secrets. I would recommend this book to any reader. I give it a 4 out of 5.
