Spotlight, Excerpt, Trailer & Interview : Secrets of the Cancer-Slaying Super Man by Benjamin Rubenstein

Book Blurb & Info

Winning was always on Benjamin Rubenstein's mind. Benjamin believed that he had a unique ability to withstand the toxic chemicals of cancer therapy and preserve his healthy cells while zapping the round-celled malignancy that had invaded his body. After he beat cancer, he did not keep up with the kids he had met during his treatment at the National Institutes of Health. In his mind, he was a winner, and he wanted to continue the fight alone.

When he developed a form of leukemia at college, he went back for a second round of treatment in Minnesota where an umbilical cord transplant saved his life. In the day-to-day account of what it's like to be dying when you haven't really lived, Benjamin brings a boy's perspective to conquering a killer disease. Secrets of the Cancer-Slaying Super Man is an eye-opening look at how attitude affects the outcome.

“Secrets of the Cancer-Slaying Super Man is one of the more unique boyhood stories of survivorship and overcoming unexpected challenges during our maturing years. Rubenstein’s positivity serves as a reminder that no matter the setback, obstacles can always be overcome with the right mindset and a great support system around you. Children and teens with cancer or other illnesses will find Secrets funny, truthful and inspiring.” – Doug Ulman, President/CEO of LIVESTRONG

Book Excerpt

The other patients were pale and completely hairless. They were people I wanted nothing to do with, because I never thought I would be a Sick Kid. The reality was difficult to deny in a room full of teenagers whom I would soon resemble. I was a Sick Kid. In the eyes of other people, I would never be able to discard the Sick Kid label.

Most were younger than me but there were two guys, Charlie Fletcher and Matt Cole, who were a few years older. Charlie had been in the Army stationed in South Carolina and Matt was a mechanic for the Army in Georgia. Matt and Charlie were so lively, wild and crazy, that I removed their Sick Kid labels.

In the hospital, I tried ignoring all the Sick Kids. Your life stinks, I silently said to them. “Mine doesn’t. Just because we both have cancer doesn’t mean we share anything else in common,” I would think to myself. I wonder if subconsciously I did see myself as sick. Maybe I even still do, but I expect that thought will stay buried forever.
