The other patients were pale and completely hairless. They were people I wanted nothing to do with, because I never thought I would be a Sick Kid. The reality was difficult to deny in a room full of teenagers whom I would soon resemble. I was a Sick Kid. In the eyes of other people, I would never be able to discard the Sick Kid label.
Most were younger than me but there were two guys, Charlie Fletcher and Matt Cole, who were a few years older. Charlie had been in the Army stationed in South Carolina and Matt was a mechanic for the Army in Georgia. Matt and Charlie were so lively, wild and crazy, that I removed their Sick Kid labels.
In the hospital, I tried ignoring all the Sick Kids. Your life stinks, I silently said to them. “Mine doesn’t. Just because we both have cancer doesn’t mean we share anything else in common,” I would think to myself. I wonder if subconsciously I did see myself as sick. Maybe I even still do, but I expect that thought will stay buried forever.
