Review : Beauty and the Brit by Lizbeth Selvig

Book Blurb

Tough and self-reliant Rio Montoya has looked after her two siblings for most of their lives. But when a gang leader makes threats against her sister Bonnie, even Rio isn’t prepared for the storm that could destroy her family. When their dreams are shattered in one dangerous moment, Rio seeks refuge for them all at a peaceful horse farm in the small town of Kennison Falls, Minnesota.

Rio should feel safe in Kennison Falls, but her budding romance with the stable’s owner, handsome British ex-pat David Pitts-Matherson, feels as dangerous as her past. The incredibly sexy David is as far from her type as any man could get, yet he tempts Rio in a way she never expected. But Rio knows that her time in Kennison Falls is limited, that her family is still in danger, and that she and David come from completely different worlds – a recipe for disaster.

David has his own secrets, and even the sparks he feels flying with the fiery and beautiful Rio may not be enough for him to let her into his heart. Can the beauty and the Brit ever find common ground? Or will their pasts stand in the way of true love?

Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

David Pitts-Matherson is visiting his pal, Chase, who is volunteering at a community center. Two young women come barreling into the center seeking refuge. They are running from a neighborhood gang leader named Hector. Rio is the oldest of the two women and she has saved her younger sister Bonnie from Hector and a major bad guy called the Boyfriend.

David and Chase get involved defusing the situation when their brother Paul shows up. He is Hector’s right hand man and he is hopping mad at Rio for the situation she placed him in. In retaliation Hector and his gang burn down Rio’s house, taking away her safety and her future.

Rio and Bonnie are forced to flee the city and end up staying with David in a small town. Rio is not thrilled having to take charity from a perfect stranger. She takes care of things herself.

She is thrust into small town life and needs to learn that not all people will hurt you. There are some people who will genuinely help you. She starts to open herself up and trust the safety she feels staying at David’s along with the feelings she is starting to have toward David himself.

Of course when her life from the city crashes into her life in the country, things become confusing and complicated. Rio is no longer sure what her dreams are.

This contemporary romance contained a tough, independent female character in Rio which was a major plus. These types of female characters are my favorite. I tend to root for the strong, sassy women that turn men’s lives upside down. It’s exactly what she did to David’s life. He truly didn’t know what hit him.

He, on the other hand, was nice but refused to stand up for himself when it came to his family. It really irritated me to see how weak he appeared. After a while I was shaking my head at the ridiculous situations that were presented between David, Rio, his parents and his ex, Katherine. It was almost like reading a YA story with the high school drama that occurs. It border lined annoying.

David did finally figure out things and made them right, but I’m not fond of a man who refuses to make his own decisions with confidence. I give this book a 3 out of 5.
