Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala
In this new YA story, Edie and her mother are on the run from her abusive dad. Edie is used to picking up everything and moving to a new place. That is exactly what happens on a day after she gets home from school. Her mom is late which worries her, but calls and tells her to pack a bag.
Edie has to leave her cat behind and move from Canada to England. Not only does Edie have to go to new school, but she is in a new country where things are different . She is introduced to the bully on the first day and learns of Jermaine Lewis, the school murderer.
Edie is shocked to see how people are treated in the school and around the city. No one wants to get involved. So she worries about herself and her mom. They follow their plans and rules. However after her mom’s first night at work, she doesn’t come back.
At first, Edie isn’t even sure whether she did or not. After school she realizes that her mom never came back. She has no idea where she went or how to find her. Edie fears the worst and being alone. She enlists the help of the last person she expected as they search for her mom.
This is a great story about what you see isn’t always what is really there. A child’s home life could be completely different than what you expected. The issues in this story are difficult to read. There is abuse, bullying, racial prejudice and hate.
Edie had to make own decisions and decide how she would treat people and what to do. The main message I got was not running from your problems, but instead dealing with them and searching help if you need it. A great story containing important and eye opening ideas. I give it a 4 out of 5.
