Book Excerpt

“Go back to your homes and prepare your belongings, but only what is necessary— food and clothing. Leave anything that will slow our journey. The white men will return soon and they must not find us here. I will send messengers to tell you when we leave and when you see them you should be ready to go,” The Datu told his people.

Everyone hurried away to do their chieftain’s bidding. Their hushed tones of alarm sounded like the waves against the breakwater. Children bewildered at not being able to play whined beside their mothers. A strong sea breeze rustled the coconut fronds overhead, dangerously knocking the coconuts against each other. People stayed away from the base of the trees burdened with fruit to avoid these falling on them. The warriors waited for the Datu to leave before they too went to their own families to make their own preparations. As soon as they were ready, they would bring their families to the great hall in the Datu’s house so they could be sure of their families’ safety and look after the Datu at the same time.

Lakam faced the wind defiantly, like the change she refused to accept. However, she knew after today things would never be the same again.
Author Info

Isobelle Cate is a woman who wears different masks. Mother-writer, wife-professional, scholar-novelist. Currently living in Manchester, she has been drawn to the little known, the secret stories, about the people and the nations: the English, the Irish, the Scots, the Welsh, and those who are now part of these nations whatever their origins. Her vision and passion are fuelled by her interest and background in history and paradoxically, shaped by growing up in a clan steeped in lore, loyalty, and legend.

Isobelle is intrigued by forces that simmer beneath the surface of these cultures, the hidden passions, unsaid desires, and yearnings unfulfilled.
