Book Blurb

A shy teen befriends an attractive beach town tourist in this refreshing summertime romance, in the tradition of Sixteenth Summer andSeventeenth Summer.

In the small town of Pearl Beach, Florida, Izzy Lucas needs only her surfboard and the water to be completely happy. She wants nothing to do with parties, popularity contests, or showing her face around the clichéd touristy hangouts. Izzy’s tight group of coworkers at the local surf shop have tried relentlessly to break shy Izzy out of her (sea)shell. But Izzy isn’t interested…until the day Ben Barker walks into the store.

Ben’s from the city. He’s cute, charming, and wants her help adjusting to beach town culture. As the weeks of surfing lessons and pizza shack visits fly by, Izzy and Ben realize their attraction goes beyond mere friendship. But Ben is only in town for three months, and Izzy wonders if this amazing guy is worth stepping out of her comfort zone for what might be the perfect summer romance—or her first heartbreak.

Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala

Isabel Lucas and her two best friends, Sofie and Nichole, work together in the Surf Girls surf shop located in Pearl Beach. Izzy is shy or as she likes to think an introvert. She has never had a boyfriend or really dated. She doesn’t know the signs when a boy likes her. She admits that she is clueless.

When Ben, who is visiting for the summer from Wisconsin, walks into the shop to hang a poster, she has an instant crush. Her friend Sofie challenges her to have a meal with him within the next two weeks. She is proud of herself when she meets that challenge and happy that the relationship doesn’t stop there.

Ben helps her come out of her shell as her feelings grow. She starts doing things she wouldn’t normally do. When the surf shop is on the line Izzy steps up to do her part to save the day. However Ben surprises all when he reveals the biggest shock of information.

I loved this book. It was a great story for teens. The storyline involves a sweet romance and true friendship, but the main theme is believing in yourself. The friendship the girls have is fun to see. They are a positive influence and exactly what friends should be.

The romance with Ben was perfect for the age of the reader. It was not a perfect romance and both Izzy and Ben had insecurities about themselves within the relationship.

The author gave a lot of information about surfing which was intriguing. The technical description and the author explains how Izzy teaches Ben and the campers opened my eyes more to the process of surfing. I am unfamiliar with surfing so it peaked my interest as I read the book. The characters were extremely likable and the storyline was sweet. I give it a 4 out of 5.
