Toot's Review by Stacy Sabala
Joscelyn’s parents are making her leave school in New Hampshire in order to move in with her sister in Maine. Jos has let her grades slip and quit all the clubs she was involved in. She has begun partying too much and exhibiting wild behavior, the opposite of how she was. No one understands why and she is not telling anyone. So she is now living in the house owned by her sister’s friend Hunter under Renee’s watchful eye.
She enrolls in the same university as her sister and meets Hannah in one of her classes. Hannah is a burn victim with very visible scars and works hard to be positive no matter how people treat her. She and Jos become instant friends. Hannah is her first friend in a long time. When her behavior changed her friends slowly left her. Jos has to learn how to be a friend again and let someone in.
She also meets Dusty at the snack machine in the hospital where Renee works. At first glance he is not her type but he is intriguing. She meets him again in the university bookstore and is shocked to learn he is a good friend of one of her housemates. He instantly annoys her with his cockiness and his constant sneaking up on her. He seems everywhere she is.
He starts to grow on her but her sister is on the warpath and a relationship of any kind is the last things she needs. Plus she is tormented over something in her past and believes she really doesn’t deserve it. She tries to shut everyone out by carrying a huge chip on her shoulder. Her sister is worried and has no idea what to do.
Hannah and Dusty seem to be the only ones making headway with Jos. When the truth comes out about what happened, her walls coming tumbling down and her devastation spills over onto everyone close to her.
This book was full of two tortured souls and as I’ve said, my favorite kind. Joscelyn is full of guilt and pain over the loss she experienced. It left her devastated and in a tail spin. She lost herself. She couldn’t find her way back so had to force a new Jos.
Her sister was the one character I wanted to slap on a regular basis. She was just annoying, demanding and overbearing. I’m surprised Jos put up with her.
Dusty was close lipped about his past life but the reader finds the similarities. It was heartwarming to see the two of them find each other. When the reader gets to the most pivotal point in the story, Jos and Dusty’s pasts are tied in some way together in the most interesting way. It caught me by total surprise and well played by the author. The book was a great read and I give it 4 out of 5.
